Sunscreen

Hi ladies,
We're heading to Aruba in 2 weeks for our babymoon and I need to stock up on sunscreen. I've googled myself crazy trying to find out which one is safest or best for pregnant women and can't seem to get consistent info. I tend to use NO-AD spf 30 and I THINK it's safe but can't find anything that says if it is or isn't. Any tips? Does anyone have suggestions on their "go to" sunscreen during pregnancy?

THANKS!!!

Laura

Re: Sunscreen

  • Hi Laura!

I read in Consumer Reports that the best sunscreens during pregnancy are Coppertone and Equate. The report prefers these sunscreens because they are lotion—they can’t be inhaled the way sprays can. Also, they are retinol and retinal palmitate-free. Studies have shown these ingredients are associated with birth defects. These sunscreens also don’t contain the nano particles associated with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Research shows that these ingredients are harmful to animals. You can find Coppertone and Equate in most drugstores and Amazon.com.

    Have fun in Aruba!

  • I use Neutrogena with Helioplex because it was recommended by my dermatologist. There aren't any sunscreens or sunblocks that are dangerous to pregnant women. The products aren't absorbed into your bloodstream, so they don't affect your baby.

  • Check out the EWG sunscreen guide if you are really concerned. Just google it. It gives ratings/recommendations based on the safety of chemicals in them. Usually when I'm bfing or pregnant I use Blue Lizard Baby along with my daughter cause I trust it. I don't use any chemical sunscreens unless I have to though the physical blocker ones are not waterproof so you have to reapply a lot if you go that route particularly if swimming.

I second checking out EWG. A lot of people recommended to me the Alba Botanical ones or the Badger Baby, but we're in So Cal and apply sunscreen daily (all of us) so they're too $$. We found CVS's clear zinc sunscreen (it's like $7/tube) and while it isn't rated by the EWG yet, it uses the less harmful blockers, so I'm OK with it.
