Teachers--how did you tell your students?

Any teachers out there? How and when did you tell your students?

Re: Teachers--how did you tell your students?

  • I've been wondering about this too- I might just not tell them haha :)

  • I'm just waiting for one of my students to ask. I'm surprised that none of them have since a few of the parents know!

I'm waiting to see if they figure it out. I teach second graders so I'm expecting someone to ask something soon. Although I might have let the cat out of the bag...I have a couple of boys that like to try to hug me the tightest at the end of the day.

If they don't figure it out by the end of the year I'll probably bring in colored cupcakes (we'll know the gender by then) and see if they can guess!
  • @smlowe9311 that's a cute idea!! I told the rest of my faculty first by putting out some goodies with a sign that said, "Eat up, my mommy doesn't want to be the only one with a big belly!" After that some of the teachers just began telling the students or would hear other teachers asking me how I was feeling it congratulating me.

I teach high school though, so I think the cupcake idea is super cute for younger kids!
  • I teach 8th grade. I waited until after my 10 week appointment to I could make sure everything was still okay with baby. I told them by showing them my 10 week ultrasound on the SMARTboard and pointing out the different parts of the baby. They're so excited and can't wait to find out the gender. I feel like everyday a student asks me if I've found out yet. I have to figure out something cute to reveal it for them that won't cost me a fortune!
  • Omg I love these ideas! I teach 1st grade and am starting to get some looks from parents. I am 15+3 and I think starting to show! I want to tell them before the parents find out as news travels quickly in my school...!

I have some friends that have told in creative ways... One played hangman and the other did broken telephone with "mrs ____ is going to be a mom. "

    :)
  • I haven't told any of my students yet...might only tell the 3rd graders I work with (I'm a special Ed teacher) because my 5th graders are leaving in June...but we'll see!
There was a teacher at my school last year who used her Halloween costume to tell her students. She made a cardboard oven with a bun in it, and the timer said "March". The kids loved it!
  • My 3rd grade girls figured it out. They have been noticing that I have had some new clothes, they said and looked like I gained weight. They were super cute about it and didn't want to ask me if I wasn't pregnant since they said they would have felt bad. I then told the rest of the class and everyone was super excited.
  • After I announced on FB, I knew my kids (9th graders) would get word of it. The next day I changed my computer background to our announcement pic and let them catch a peek at it when switching websites. It was fun to see their brain wheels start turning!
  • I'm waiting for my grade 3's to say something. I catch them looking at me like they can tell I am getting bigger... But no one has said anything yet!

I did have a parent come up to me a poke my bump. That caught me off guard!

I put mine in my morning message at 12.5 weeks. Its kindergarten and at the bottom of the message we usually unscramble letter magnets to make words. I told them I had a surprise and the words were bottle, baby and tummy. They got it pretty quick and they were excited :) it was fun!
  • I teach 2nd grade. We play 20 questions a lot, when there's 3 minutes to kill, so I put the ultrasound pic in a bag and made them figure out what it was. They got it in 19 questions! Then I put the pic on the smart board and showed them the body parts. They were so excited, asked a million questions, started suggesting names. It was adorable!
  • I teach 9th and 12th. My seniors haven't said anything, but my 9th grade students have peers whose parents are teachers (the teachers know I'm pregnant). One of my 9th grade boys asked my sub yesterday if I'm pregnant, who is another classroom teacher who took my last hour for my doctor appointment, so I knew I had to acknowledge the topic today. I just called them out on being so nosy and then shared that I had heard my second baby's heartbeat while they were busy with small group work back at school. They were all so excited. Once I told that class, I wanted to be sure my seniors didn't feel like I was keeping a secret from them, so I shared it with them, too. They were shocked and didn't believe me at first. At 13w1d, I just look a little thicker :) I'm sure tomorrow they'll all know (7-12) and I'll have visitors from past years who come in to chat about it!!

  • I teach 4th grade and waited until I was around 14 weeks it just so happens the day after the ultrasound it was April Fools day I had taken a pic of my daughter wearing her big sister shirt and projected it up on my smartboard and waiting for the kids to read her shirt! At first they didn't know if to believe me or not!
  • I told my teammates, principal, AP and secretary a few days before my 12 week appt and we announced that night after so a lot of the staff knew and kept congratulating me in the halls so I told my kids I had a surprise to tell them and most of them guessed it before I even showed them the picture of our announcement hahaha they noticed I was eating all the time in class and one of my girls said I looked how her sister looked when she was pregnant hahaha but they are super excited and are going to make a chart of baby names and if it's a girl or a boy haha all their ideas! :)

I teach 10, 11, and 12, and am very private, so I just let them figure it out. Rumors started at nine weeks and people have been asking openly this week (15 - I have a pretty serious bump). Tell one teenage girl, and you tell 'me all. ;). Dramatic reveals just aren't my style.
  • My students knew very quickly. I teach dance, not academics (well not yet, trying to finish my English degree) and I have extremely tight relationships with my students, especially the older ones. We spend more time together than we do with our respective families so it really wasn't hard for them to put 2 and 2 together. They know I've been wanting this for soooo long so they each absolutely flipped when they found out. I didn't make an announcement (I don't like pulling focus during our class time) they just each started finding out or guessing one way or another and kept it to themselves since I hadn't made an announcement in class yet... Wow you know you work with some pretty darn respectful kids when they're teenagers and they keep that kind of news to themselves. I love my students :)
  • I teach high school - after our FB announcement, I figured news would travel quickly. At the end of class, I just put up our announcement picture and waited to see who would notice first.

They've been excited and some even want to throw me a baby shower, but for the most part, it got back to business as usual the next day.
  • I told mine right away... Mostly because I was so sick the first trimester they needed to know what was going on if I ran out of the room at full speed...

I have high school special ed kids so I just told them. I brought in pictures from my first ultrasound so they could see the little bean growing inside my belly. They thought it was really cool and have been really excited...
