My mother-in-law wants to take our 3.5 year old from Texas to Wisconsin for an engagement party for a family member. Apparently, the party will include children so that's not my issue. My issue is my mother-in-law driving across the country by herself with my 3 year old son. Now, I was raised in a family where I didn't leave my parents for any long extended period of time which is why this whole idea of my child being hours away by car seem very strange and even crazy to me. On the other hand, my mother-in-law use to send my husband to spend the whole summer with his grandparents so she thinks this is completely fine. 

Either way, I have my husbands complete support on whatever decision I make and my gut says hell no, but I wanted to just know what some other moms thought. Am I just being over protective?

Totally depends on your son's relationship with your MIL and how comfortable you are with it. Personally, it's hard for me to be away from my kids for more than a night, but I recognize that it's my own itchiness more so than real worries about their safety. Either way, you're the mom, so you're in the driver's seat, and you can say no if you are uncomfortable with the plan. I do it all the time,

my gut says hell no too.  If there was an accident or something I could never forgive myself.  I'd hate thinking of my son at a party having fun and I'm not there. Why don't you go too?
