It is possible (and normal, but not common) to have long lasting contractions that don't let up, called tetanic contractions. I had that for several hours last week (one of them lasted a solid 5 hours with no relief). But it was extremely painful and definitely contractions, not BH.
If it was just that the top of your belly felt harder, it could have been baby's position or something else. Just ask your doctor or midwife about it at your next appointment.
