Pumping every hour?!

i had my son 3 days ago but had to give him formula since my milk hadn't come in, I cant seem to catch up...is it ok to pump every hour? That's the only way I'll be able to keep up with feeding times and since my son has been drinking breast milk he won't drink formula

Re: Pumping every hour?!

  • Does your clinic or hospital have lactation nurses? They will be the best at answering your question. Your milk probably hasn't come in since your son is only 3 days. My daughter was born on a Tues and I didn't get milk until Friday, only collostrum the first few days.

  • If you pump every hour your body will make enough milk for him to have a full feeding every hour and I'd he doesn't eat or you don't pump every hour you will get engorged quickly and it is going to hurt if you nurse and then pump an extra 2 to 3 times a day you should get plenty

This is more for other people, as your milk should be in today or tomorrow. Learn how to hand express your colostrum if baby is having trouble latching or suckling. With hand expression you really need to work it to get it flowing. You may think that nothing is coming, try a few different techniques - it can take a couple of minutes that first try. You can then try getting baby to latch or collect colostrum (3-5mls) and feed by finger with syringe, by lapping. Those initial feedings don't require much volume as the colostrum is nutrient dense.

@melmey25, I am sorry that you didn't get the support you needed at hospital/birthing center. That is pretty basic stuff. Just remember that when you are pumping, to really try and empty the breast to ensure that you are getting the hind milk, that will help baby feel fuller a little longer and stimulate production.
