Heart Palpitations

Hey everyone. Having what, Im guessing to be, heart palpitations. They don't happen often, ive noticed them after walking quickly or the trek up to my third floor apartment with two arms full of groceries. Adding to that.. I only notice them when I sit/rest after doing either of these activities. (Hasnt happened much, maybe 3-4 times throughout this pregnany) Also, I'm 20 weeks pregnant, if that matters. :-?

Any other ladies experience these during pregnancy? Google has my nerves wracked, listing causes from preeclampsia to heart disease. :-S

Let me know, is this fairly common?

Re: Heart Palpitations

  • I get heart palpitations or fast flutters often. They usually occur when I've been rushing around & then sat down. I usually just sit let it run its cause then have a glass of water. Sorry I can't give you any advice on what it may be as I'm not a doctor & would hate to say it may be this or maybe that and have you worried. My advise would be to talk to your doctor about maybe they could be of better help..

  • @ittybittybean610 I found this.. Hope this helps.

A pregnant woman's body contains far more blood---up to 50 percent more---than that of a non-pregnant woman, explain Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel, in their book "What To Expect When You're Expecting." This provides for the needs of the growing baby by ensuring that there's plenty of blood for both mother and fetus. Unfortunately, a pregnant woman must move that significantly enhanced blood volume around her body with the very same heart she relies upon while not pregnant, meaning that the heart has to work much harder during pregnancy than during other times. The increased workload forces the heart to beat with greater force and more frequently in order to keep blood pressure adequate; this results in more frequent "errors" in heartbeat---moments during which the beat becomes a bit asynchronous---and these errors are felt as palpitations. Typically, they last only a few seconds, and are generally not accompanied by any other symptoms.
  • I had heart paplitations when i was in between 4-13 weeks pregnant now that I am 23 weeks I have felt them them twice but not as often, my Dr. told methis is normal since the heart is pumping double! :)

I have had them with two pregnancies. I asked my doctor and its not a problem and is really normal. It has actually been the first pregnancy symptom I had with both, oddly enough. He basically said unless I actually pass out or come very close, then its nothing to worry about. Your body is just working extra hard right now. Maybe (and this is just me so it may be completely off base) its just your body trying to tell you to slow it down a bit. I would talk to your doctor about it - I don't know your history - but chances are its nothing. As tempting as it is, its usually best to stay away from the internet on things like these. You'll be terrified and your doctor is ready for these calls, especially if it is your first!

I have them as well. Dr said it was normal. And I could try soaking in Epson salt because it could be from low magnesium. They don't seem to be as bad as they were since I take regular soaks in the tub now. Besides is a great stress reliever

I had them really bad with my first. After bloodwork, an echo and a heart monitor they found I was severely anemic which can cause palputations. They also found my heart was beating an extra time which they said is normal when your pregnant because of the increase of blood flow. Have your iron levels been checked?
