Article in Herald (more stuff to worry about)

I'm getting so tired of having to worry about every little thing, and the baby isn't even here yet.

The Everett Herald: New product safety law a blow to shops

This article says that used clothing and toy stores are in trouble because of lead testing.

Re: Article in Herald (more stuff to worry about)

  • yeah, I figure they have GOT to find a loophole or an exception for used stuff.   Like make people put a tag on them that says "this is a used item for resale that has not been individually tested" or something.

This law will crush a lot of etsy vendors, and technically will make it so you can't sell stuff in yard sales, or craigslist or ebay too.

  • I get the concern about lead intoys and such but why clothes? seriously I dont buy anything new for the boys its all consignment, thrift store and ebay/CL stuff. I would go broke if that stuff became unavailable to me.

  • There's no way this is going to work. The producers/manufacturers of the initial fabric or toy should be responsible for testing their products before selling them, not the reseller... especially not the used clothing store.
  • I think the phthalates are another concern and maybe they're in clothes more?

  • And the really ridiculous thing is that EVERYTHING has to be tested, even wooden or knit toys that are clearly nontoxic. ?It's totally ridiculous.

There are actually some clothes that contain lead. ?I think it's typically the embellishments, like buttons, etc.

I hope that there's some kind of loophole or exception. ?The effect will be devastating for small businesses and for people who can't afford to buy everything new. ?Plus the cost of toys and clothes will probably go up, because it will be more expensive to make them. ?

I'm all for detoxifying, but there's got to be a more practical approach.

  • imagine how this is going to affect goodwill and such.  There are a ton of people out there that simply can not afford new clothing items.  Sad!

  • I get the concern, but it is going to put a lot of people out of business!!  IMHO, the gov't s/only protect us so much.  As consumers, we should be responsible for doing our own research on used things.  As for homemade stuff, the "ingredients" should be tested before they are sold.  So, in effect, the homemade product would them have been tested before it was put together.

     UGH!

  • There is lead in almost all garden hoses, electrical cords, christmas lights; it's even in yoga mats.  It's all over the place.  So are phthalates (soft plastics, pvc, etc. and cosmetics).
