3 1/2 week old gagging

My newborn is now 3 1/2 weeks old and has acted like he's gagging every now and again since weve brought him home. He just makes the gagging face, nothing comes up when he does it and it's very infrequent, hes maybe done it about 6-8 times since coming home , but it terrifies me. I've noticed he's done it about 20-30 min after a feeding or when he's just fallin asleep. Ive spoke with the Doctor and he says it could be because his esophagus muscle isnt that strong yet and just to monitor it. We burp him often at feedings and keep him upright for 30 min after a bottle. Anyone else experience this or have any other advice? Im worried sick he'll gag and choke in his sleep.

Re: 3 1/2 week old gagging

  • My daughter is also 3 1/2 weeks and she does the same thing! She's chokes more when she's actually feeding (like she tried to swallow and breath at the same time) but when she's sleeping she acts as if she's choking/gagging and nothing comes up. It's so scary! I hardly want to sleep so I can make sure she's. Sorry I have no advice. Hopefully our sweet babies grow out of this. They're scaring their mommas!

  • I asked our bf consultant about this, and also googled it, and scarily it's normal. Our bf consultant told us to just try and get used to it, as if we've burped her and she's asleep then it isn't bothering her too much. We've been told she'd cry if it was bothering her - it's just the worst thing in the world to hear! Ours isn't quite a gagging sound, however - it's more a gurgle, pretty much like when you have a huge meal and lie down on an overly full stomach. I've also been told it's the oesophagus developing and that eventually she'll grow out of it. Good luck!
  • Mine does this all the time, usually while our after BFing. I think it's one of toast things that you just have to trust that you'll be aware of when it's happening. I have my LO in a cosleeper crib and I always wake up when I hear it. If you pick baby up and sit them upright, it usually stops. My little guy well go right back to feeding once his airway is clear.
  • My 3.5 week old just started doing this and it freaked me out! He gags hard abs it sounds terrible. No reason for it that I can see. Poor guy :(
  • Mine did this a lot as well. It is much less frequent now though as she is 8 weeks tomorrow.  We did the same thing that other people did, sitting upright, burping, etc.
