Bpm & gender

So I'm 30 weeks pregnant and they told me my baby's a babygirl when I was 20 weeks pregnant, her Bpm today at my appt was 133 bpm. Is it true that lower bpm is for a boy and a higher is a girl? Cause this is the lowest it's been, but totally normal. Just has me wondering if ultrasound told gender wrong lol.

Re: Bpm & gender

  • The BPM is an OWT (Old Wives Tale). I read somewhere that statistics have shown it means nothing one way or the other. Its fun tho, being Team Green and using it as a guessing point. If I were you I would have more faith in the ultrasound (tho there is a small margin of error with those, too) than the Doppler readings

  • I have 3 year old girl and one on the way, my oldest daughters hearth rate was always 160s and this one is always in the 130-140s. And she is clearly a girl!
  • We're team green but at all my appts the bpm have been around 140 - the owt says a boy is below 140 I think and a girl above so my hubby is saying it's a boy however at the hospital appt this wk it was 128 initially then I started laughing and moving and it went up to 154.... I would def be trusting the scan over bpm

  • There is no scientific evidence proving that heart rate has to do with the sex of the baby. Also, as the baby grows, it's heart rate drops.
  • This is not a reliable way to determine the sex on the baby.  In addition to the fact that it generally slows as they get bigger/older, the baby's heart rate acts similarly to your own - meaning that when they are active it will be higher than when they are sleeping.  So the number can completely depend on what they're doing when the doppler is being used.

For reference, my baby girl had a heart rate of 175 at my 8w ultrasound, 165 at 12w ultrasound, 145 at 18w ultrasound, and then on the doppler 130 at 22w, 150 at 26w, and 140 at 30w.  None of this is relevant to her sex.  It just means that i have a healthy baby growing inside of me.

  • Im having twin girls, their hr have always been in the 130's. Just like any other wives tale you have a 50/50 chance. Believe the tech, they can see actual body parts :)
  • I wouldn't read too much into it. I asked my ob yesterday and she said completely normal for heart rate to decrease. Baby is getting ready for outside world so the heart rate decreases. I am team green but so far heart rate for my l/o has been in 160s,150s,140s, and 130s.
  • LO's heart rate fluctuates with activity so it depends on when you measure HR. But if you're asking specifically about baseline HR, my LO's started in 150s at Week 9, was 120s/130s in the second tri, and now hovers around 140 according to my last NST, and I am TEAM BLUE. Seems like normal fluctuations would negate any solid associations between sex and HR.

  • I'm having a boy and his heart rate has been 140s-150s every time.
  • My last boy stayed at 155 .. My girl this time is 135-144 all the time. It's fun to guess with it. But not something to bank on.
  • My baby girls is always lower 140 at most app
  • Our boy's heartrate has always been higher (150s-160s). He just recently dropped to 130s at 31 weeks. I tell all the ladies who guessed girl based on heartrate that my son likes to prove everyone wrong. Lol.
  • My understanding is this Old Wives Tale is pretty recent and based on a scientific study that was done on baby heart rates *while the mother was in labor*. (Which pretty accurately predicted the baby's sex...) But being in labor and being 7 months pregnant at rest at the doctor's office are quite different, obv.

Stick with ultrasounds and the scientifically proven methods for a better guess at your baby's sex before birth.

  • I really think it's an OWT!  My DD's bpm were always in the 150s and my son's have been in the 150s as well.  My SIL is pregnant with a girl and her's have been in the 150s too.

The Chinese gender predictor, however, has been spot on every time!

    :)
  • @bride92310 I couldn't figure out the Chinese predictor since I didn't know the exact day of conception, but the pencil test worked. My MIL has correctly guessed the sex of my baby and all 3 of my SILs 7 children! Crazy huh. So next we're having a girl lol.
  • Both of my girls' heart rates were always in the 130s and so far, DS hangs out around 160.
