Anyone have OB they don't like??

So I have gained 5 pounds in the last 5 days and had a bad headache. Because I had preeclampsia with my DD I decided to check my blood pressure at Walgreens. My first reading was 151/76, so I sat for another 10 minutes and the pharmacist took it again and it was 135/90. The pharmacist thought it was odd that the bottom number came up. The pharmacist suggested that perhaps I should purchase a machine and be checking regularly and suggested I let my doctor know the results. The pharmacist was a client of mine so she knows me and seemed a little concerned. So I called my OB with the numbers just to give them a heads up as to the numbers and the nurse said I needed to come in for an appointment this afternoon. My doctor still had me on an every 4 week schedule and the nurse thought that maybe I needed to be seen more regularly since my blood pressure has been running high (In the 135-140 range the past 6 weeks).

So when I went to the doctor, after taking a 2 hour nap, my blood pressure was 135/76. So the doctor spent 30 minutes trying to convince me that I have an anxiety disorder and that that is why I have had so many visits to him and L &D. Forget the fact that I have passed 3 kidney stones in the last two months IN the hospital which they have sent to the lab. Or the fact that I was spotting. He told me that I am an "intelligent person and craft things in such a way." Implying that I am making up ailments in my pregnancy because I have an underlying anxiety disorder!

Needless to say I was pissed and he spent the next 30 minutes trying to convince me of my "disorder". Telling me I was in denial. When I asked him what visit wasn't a legitimate visit he couldn't name one but argued that taking the number of visits as a whole he feels that I have an anxiety problem!

When I told my husband, who has been caring for my 8 month old, just turned 2 year old, and 5 year old, during my hospital stays (for the kidney stones) he was livid. My husband wanted me to switch doctors. Unfortunately where I live you can't switch an OB at 30 1/2 weeks. My husband feels that the doctor is covering his tracks as I am an attorney and he thinks the doctor feels like maybe he should have been monitoring me closer. If you can't convince my husband (who has been frequently caring for 3 small children by himself) that I am a hypochondriac with anxiety, then I am certainly not going to be convinced. The doctor told me after his "anxiety disorder" diagnosis that he wants to see me weekly and wants me to come to the office twice weekly to have my blood pressure checked (so as to stop any unnecessary visits according to him). When I told him I didn't think twice weekly blood pressure checks were necessary that I could come in if I felt like I needed one he claimed that it would alleviate any more visits. Oh and the doctor claims that Walgreens blood pressure checks are inaccurate! Despite the fact that the pharmacists take the blood pressure!

I don't think checking my blood pressure at a pharmacy 2 times in 30 weeks is being a hypochondriac. And both times that I checked the pressure at the pharmacy I had symptoms that were concerning. And both times my blood pressure was concerningly high.

When did your doctor take you off ever 4 week visit schedule? And any thoughts on how to respond to this guy (who right now I feel is an asshole) would be helpful!

  • Sorry for such a long post I am still reeling from this visit!

  • Why can't you switch after 30 weeks?
  • That's some for real b.s. Any way you could still check around to see if someone could take you? Also, I would put my foot down and confront your doctor. Tell him you disagree with his diagnosis and that you would appreciate him taking you more seriously considering your past high risk pregnancy. Are there any other doctors in the practice you can see?
  • We only have 3 OB's in town (I live in a small town) and they won't switch late in pregnancy.
  • That's terrible. You have a right to choose your own health care. I'm so sorry to hear about your experience. I'm pissed on your behalf.

Agree - I've seen moms on other boards on the bump talk about how they've switched as late as 38 weeks. Definitely late in the game, but if you're not comfortable with your OB, then he is NOT the person who should be delivering your child. I definitely would look into switching. Good luck!

  • Unfortunately all 3 OB's in town are sole practitioners.

Any chance you could take up a practice that's a little further out? I still say call him out and ask for some respect regarding your concerns.

I'm not sure what "sole practitioners" means, but if it's preventing you from switching, that stinks. As for your question about when OB switched me off of 4 weeks between visits, my 2 week visits started after 32 weeks. So it was every 4 weeks up until 32 weeks, then 34 and 36 weeks, then every week until delivery.

At my practice there are 3 OB's and I would think if he had other associate drs within his practice you should be able to switch. If he is a one-horse show, tho, that may be harder. And yes, why can't you switch after 30 weeks? That seems like bs to me (not saying you are bs, saying the rule is bs - just for clarification).

If for some reason you truly cannot switch then I would have a truth segment with your Dr. I don't know if he is trying to cover his tracks like your hubs says, but if he wants to do weekly bp checks, why not do them? Or ask for a NST or something to get a baseline and then maybe demonstrate to his nurse you can properly check your own bp and do home checks that you report in?

He is a one horse show. And the OB's are pretty tight knit here in our town. The next closest away would be 30 miles and as that is a neighboring small town I highly doubt they would take me on this late either.
  • Not to be rude, but only one of your blood pressures is actually concerning and that would be the 150 one & even then it's not completely horrible seeing how fast it came down after sitting for only 10 minutes. I understand it could be concerning with a previous history of preeclampsia, but I feel like having your doctor check twice a week would be a great idea.

I work in healthcare and often see the home blood pressure cuffs cause unnecessary worry because they often read higher than what they are.

Maybe you could continue to check them at home, but follow up with the physician biweekly for just BP checks. Not saying this is the case, but a physician can't just go by what you're telling him that your at home BPs are. What if he were to start you on a medication and it dropped your BP too much? Dropping your BP can actually be more harmful than letting it run in the 130/140 because your baby is used to it being a bit higher, if you drop it too much it can actually cause profusion and prevent blood flow tot the placenta.

Just go in for the biweekly BP checks, it'll give you peace of mind :)

I have never done an at home BP. I have only done them on two different occasions at the pharmacy. Three weeks ago when I had it tested at the pharmacy it was 167/75, which is why I called the doctor. I don't have an at home machine and the doctor said they are not necessarily accurate so I don't intend to get one. I wasn't concerned today when it dropped after sitting because 135 is where it has been running. So I called merely to let them know, and the nurse was the one who asked me to come in. I agree 135 is not concerning as that is what I have been running for the last 6 weeks.

I apologize then! I misread your initial post that said the pharmacist suggested the at home one. Sorry about that!

I hope you start to feel better and that your blood pressures stay pretty reasonable! I understand exactly how you feel ( I have PIH) and I know it can be frustrating!
  • What are your blood pressures running? Just out of curiosity. And how do doctors differentiate between PIH and preeclampsia?
  • And you're right I probably should just go to the doctor for the checks twice weekly at his request despite the fact that I feel like he is only doing it to placate me. Except I don't want to waste my time if he is not actually concerned and truly feels I need twice a week checks! So while part of me wants to just be defiant as he acts like he is just doing this to make me feel better (which makes me feel like it is a complete waste of time) you are probably right, I should just suck it up and do it.
  • I was getting 164/100 and running around there. I was almost passing out when I would move around.

The reason I'm not diagnosed with preeclampsia is because my liver functions are normal, no protein in my urine and no abnormal swelling. Having PIH does put me at risk for preeclampsia and IUGR so I'm having to have biweekly testing (BPP ultrasounds and NST) starting next week. I was on BP medication 3 times a day (methyldopa) but then I started contracting so we switched to a medication that works for contractions and BP (procardia) and my BP has been running higher since the switch. My physician told me that as longer as I wasn't higher than 160/110, she was happy with my pressures and as long as I don't start exhibiting preeclampsia symptoms I was okay.

160/110? Wow, that's high! My doc wants mine below 140/90. I take Methyldopa twice a day, and it's been working well for me. He increased my dosage a few weeks ago when I got three or four readings that were 150s/80s.
  • My normal is in the 140s and if it drops the pressure too low it'll actually cause problems with the placenta, but I'm being monitoring twice a week with ultrasounds and NSTs. And thankfully my pressures haven't been anywhere close to that :)
  • Unfortunately for me my membranes prematurely ruptured around 10:30 and I was ambulanced to our local hospital. Then transported to the closest neonatal hospital with high risk OB's and am now waiting to see if the magnesium will stop the contractions. I am 30 weeks and 3 days and their goal is to try to get me to 34 weeks. I will be hospitalized until I deliver. On a bright note, I got a new doc, just not the way I planned! I am hoping to make it to 34 weeks at this point. My poor husband is panicked about the prospect of me being hospitalized for 3 1/2 weeks (as we have the three kids at home, two of them under 2).
  • @bosleyb I am thinking of you!!!! I hope that baby stays in and you are infection free for 3-4 more weeks lady!!!!!!!
  • @bosleyb thoughts and prayers going out to you and your DH. Really hoping for 3-4 more weeks of baking infection free!! Hospital bed rest can be challenging but keep your chin up and focus on the goal - your precious LO!
  • Oh goodness!! Prayers are headed your way!! Stay in there baby for just a little bit longer!!!!!!!
  • My midwife is a 45 minute drive away but I feel like she is totally worth it. My first was a little rude on some of my choices. Then again it is a bigger town. So sorry you are going through this. I'd definitely plan for a conversation, write down all these points you have and try to stay calm while discussing so he doesn't write it off as more anxiety. If he's still being like that have a heartfelt discussion with the other OB's around. Good luck!! Work to prepare yourself for the birth
  • @bosleyb I am sorry you are now facing this situation! It sounds like you are in a good place with good docs. I hope your original OB feels like the jack*ss that he is...
  • Hoy cow! I hope they're able to keep you pregnant for a few more weeks.

  • @bosleyb thinking of you and your family! Hoping your LO cooks for a little longer!
  • Wow...that doc is eating his words and his so called "diagnosis" of you. I hope you dispute that so it's taken out of your medical record. He should be worried with you being an attorney and all...lol. Your concerns were obviously legitimate and you know your body well enough to know that something wasn't right.

I am praying for you and your family. I hope baby stays in to bake some more and that you don't get an infection. Please keep us posted!

Oh my gosh! So glad they've got your labor stopped and that you're in good neonatal hands. You can do this!
  • Yeah, I hope you file a complaint against that Dr once you and baby are out of danger. Anxiety, my ass

The high risk OB came in this morning and made it clear that the premature rupture of the membranes and huge clot and bleeding is due to "smoldering preeclampsia". So my asshole OB that claimed I had an anxiety disorder was CLEARLY wrong!

Honestly! Take care of yourself and you should definitely file a complaint against that doctor. What an ass!

  • What is "smoldering preeclampsia"? I know what preeclampsia is but never heard of smoldering.

I'm sorry that you are going through this but it sounds like you are in good hands now!
  • I want to slap your Dr for you. I hope everything goes well and baby waits a few more weeks!

I think the other Dr was meaning it like something that is on a low boil. Its low, so it builds up energy slowly, but eventually it does boil. Same way a smoldering coal can light an official fire. The coal itself is not on fire, but its hot enough that it will eventually catch fire with proper fuel. More a figurative descriptive of smolder than a literal. That's how I'm interpreting it as, anyway
