So I have gained 5 pounds in the last 5 days and had a bad headache. Because I had preeclampsia with my DD I decided to check my blood pressure at Walgreens. My first reading was 151/76, so I sat for another 10 minutes and the pharmacist took it again and it was 135/90. The pharmacist thought it was odd that the bottom number came up. The pharmacist suggested that perhaps I should purchase a machine and be checking regularly and suggested I let my doctor know the results. The pharmacist was a client of mine so she knows me and seemed a little concerned. So I called my OB with the numbers just to give them a heads up as to the numbers and the nurse said I needed to come in for an appointment this afternoon. My doctor still had me on an every 4 week schedule and the nurse thought that maybe I needed to be seen more regularly since my blood pressure has been running high (In the 135-140 range the past 6 weeks).
So when I went to the doctor, after taking a 2 hour nap, my blood pressure was 135/76. So the doctor spent 30 minutes trying to convince me that I have an anxiety disorder and that that is why I have had so many visits to him and L &D. Forget the fact that I have passed 3 kidney stones in the last two months IN the hospital which they have sent to the lab. Or the fact that I was spotting. He told me that I am an "intelligent person and craft things in such a way." Implying that I am making up ailments in my pregnancy because I have an underlying anxiety disorder!
Needless to say I was pissed and he spent the next 30 minutes trying to convince me of my "disorder". Telling me I was in denial. When I asked him what visit wasn't a legitimate visit he couldn't name one but argued that taking the number of visits as a whole he feels that I have an anxiety problem!
When I told my husband, who has been caring for my 8 month old, just turned 2 year old, and 5 year old, during my hospital stays (for the kidney stones) he was livid. My husband wanted me to switch doctors. Unfortunately where I live you can't switch an OB at 30 1/2 weeks. My husband feels that the doctor is covering his tracks as I am an attorney and he thinks the doctor feels like maybe he should have been monitoring me closer. If you can't convince my husband (who has been frequently caring for 3 small children by himself) that I am a hypochondriac with anxiety, then I am certainly not going to be convinced. The doctor told me after his "anxiety disorder" diagnosis that he wants to see me weekly and wants me to come to the office twice weekly to have my blood pressure checked (so as to stop any unnecessary visits according to him). When I told him I didn't think twice weekly blood pressure checks were necessary that I could come in if I felt like I needed one he claimed that it would alleviate any more visits. Oh and the doctor claims that Walgreens blood pressure checks are inaccurate! Despite the fact that the pharmacists take the blood pressure!
I don't think checking my blood pressure at a pharmacy 2 times in 30 weeks is being a hypochondriac. And both times that I checked the pressure at the pharmacy I had symptoms that were concerning. And both times my blood pressure was concerningly high.
When did your doctor take you off ever 4 week visit schedule? And any thoughts on how to respond to this guy (who right now I feel is an asshole) would be helpful!
Re: Anyone have OB they don't like??
If for some reason you truly cannot switch then I would have a truth segment with your Dr. I don't know if he is trying to cover his tracks like your hubs says, but if he wants to do weekly bp checks, why not do them? Or ask for a NST or something to get a baseline and then maybe demonstrate to his nurse you can properly check your own bp and do home checks that you report in?
I work in healthcare and often see the home blood pressure cuffs cause unnecessary worry because they often read higher than what they are.
Maybe you could continue to check them at home, but follow up with the physician biweekly for just BP checks. Not saying this is the case, but a physician can't just go by what you're telling him that your at home BPs are. What if he were to start you on a medication and it dropped your BP too much? Dropping your BP can actually be more harmful than letting it run in the 130/140 because your baby is used to it being a bit higher, if you drop it too much it can actually cause profusion and prevent blood flow tot the placenta.
Just go in for the biweekly BP checks, it'll give you peace of mind
I hope you start to feel better and that your blood pressures stay pretty reasonable! I understand exactly how you feel ( I have PIH) and I know it can be frustrating!
The reason I'm not diagnosed with preeclampsia is because my liver functions are normal, no protein in my urine and no abnormal swelling. Having PIH does put me at risk for preeclampsia and IUGR so I'm having to have biweekly testing (BPP ultrasounds and NST) starting next week. I was on BP medication 3 times a day (methyldopa) but then I started contracting so we switched to a medication that works for contractions and BP (procardia) and my BP has been running higher since the switch. My physician told me that as longer as I wasn't higher than 160/110, she was happy with my pressures and as long as I don't start exhibiting preeclampsia symptoms I was okay.
2nd round exp 8/20/18.
I'm sorry that you are going through this but it sounds like you are in good hands now!
