No-- the fetal echo is not for sex* determination. If your child has a chance for heart issues then they are focused on the real health issue NOT what is between the kid's legs.
You can ask but the tech might look at you like you have another head or question your priorities. I think my doctor (and tech) would have been annoyed at a question like that.
Schedule an elective ultrasound at a boutique for sex determination. The Fetal Echo is a real medical scan & not simply an extra opportunity to check how your kid will pee.
My baby's heart is good, there just doing a closer look bc I was born with a whole in my heart. Of course I want a healthy baby . I was just asking
The question is a little offensive to those that require extensive medical screening for real issues that they are dealing with. I am not sure why this hasn't occurred to you that the tech is not there just to entertain you.
You can "just ask" but you will "just" get a variety of answers. Not all of them will make you happy. If you "just ask" be prepared to get all kinds of answers in a public forum.
I'm not trying to be mean. I'm just giving you a friendly heads-up that those going through real health challenges might feel that you are minimizing the seriousness of a Fetal Echo by trying to turn it into an elective sex scan.
You don't have to have malicious intent to offend. It appears to be a lack of awareness on your part.
You can ask...but i'd wait until after the tech has completed the necessary measurements/screen captures/procedures for the fetal echo before bringing this up.
I had a surprise ultrasound at 26 weeks because my fundal measurement was high...once the tech told us that everything looked fine, i asked her to confirm that it was still a girl. My anatomy scan was at 18 weeks, which is a hair on the early side, so i figured since she was in there and everything else looked fine, it couldn't hurt to double check! But the techs at my OBGYN practice are really good about explaining everything that they're doing and seeing. At this particular scan she told me that baby's developmental age was right on schedule, she was breech, her percentile for size, and that she had a "small head and short legs" which is consistent with her parents! Some places are different - the techs are instructed not to discuss what they're seeing and you have to wait to speak to the doctor to find out what's going on. if that's what typically happens to you, i wouldn't count on getting extra information out of a medically necessary scan.
Re: gender question..
I have no experience with fetal echos... but I would think that the medical aspect would be the concern, not the baby's genitals.
