Weekly GD check in 4/14

hows everyone doing?

I have my follow up appointment with my dietician today. The last 2.5 days my numbers have been great. Saturday they were a little high (but not above 140). I think I'm getting the hang of it.

Re: Weekly GD check in 4/14

  • Overall my sugars are fine. My fasting numbers are starting to creep up again. I've been doing so well too! My dr did warn me about this happening. She said that the further along you get the harder it is for your body to process sugars, especially in the third trimester. I may end up having to take medications soon.

  • Fasting numbers are never under 95. Ever. Tomorrow is follow up; we shall see.
  • Just got word this morning. I failed my 3hr and will be joining the GD club.

    :(

Not that I don't think you guys are swell, but I'm sad about joining...

I should hear back this afternoon with my dietician appointment so I can get all hooked up with my gear. I hope you guys won't mind being a bit of a resource for me since I'm definitely new (and a little late to the game). I just hope my last few weeks of indulging haven't cause any harm!

  • @mccall35 it's really not bad at all! I've had the dx for about two weeks but have been monitoring for a week since my dietician appointment. I have found that I actually get to eat a ton but it's just spaced out. It's really tricky to keep on a schedule though. My favorite guilty pleasure is Kind bars. Something sweet and is filling
  • I got diagnosed extremely late I'm already 32 + 3. The doc is making me monitor for 1 week to see what my numbers are but was told not to change my diet. I'm a little confused about not having to change my diet. Anyone else have that happen? So far today is my first day my fasting number was 80 and after breakfast (two bowls of cornflakes) was 105 after two hours. New to this all so still don't know how my body reacts to foods. I've only gained 13lbs this pregnancy a lot better than the weight I gained with my first. Only thing I'm dealing with is fatigue I'm tired all the time!
  • I can not get my fasting numbers below 95, EVER. I think they are going to have to put me on some medications. I'm not thrilled about it since that means seeing the doctor twice a week every week until babe gets here. But I guess that is better than pushing a bowling ball out.

What are you eating for your night time snack?

When I first started the dietician at my hospital had me monitor what I eat for about a week or two without changing my diet much. I think she wanted an honest snap shot of what I eat and what my sugars are to help me modify my diet. I'm not a specialist or anything like that but from what it looks like your sugars seems ok. Especially after eating two bowls of cereal, my dietician told me to avoid it!

What's EVERYONE eating for their night time snack? :)
I'm just wondering because I've been eating hard boiled eggs almost every night and I'm kinda tired of it. I also tried protein shakes which worked for a bit but for some reason my fastings started going over 95.
  • Apples with peanut butter
    Toast with peanut butter
    Almonds, crackers and cheese
    Kind bar

On other months they love the carb smart ice cream. I need to look into getting some
  • I failed my one hour yesterday :( my sugar was 153 :( they didn't tell me if this was really bad or what it was supposed to be or anything. I don't know if I should be worried or try to change what I'm eating before my 3 hour test. It's 2 weeks away and I'm already 30 weeks... any advice ladies is greatly appreciated. I know I should have asked more questions but at the time I was kinda in shock that I failed....
  • Most people will fail the 1 hr test if you change how you eat it could give a false negative. The 3 hour test is the actual diagnosis. Some docs say under 140 and others say under 130 for the 1 hour just depends on your docs practice. Good luck.

My Drs office will diagnose you with GD if your one hour was above 200. I wouldn't change your diet too much bc you really don't want a false negative for your 3 hour. Why are they waiting so long for you to retest?

Gals..I've been loving zoodles. It's the spiralizer that makes zucchini into noodles. I can still eat my pasta but I do a whole zucchini and only 1/2 C of noodles.
  • I just found Planters Cocoa Almonds and have been eating them as a night time snack. They help my sweet craving but they only have 2g more carbs than the regular almonds I was going to buy instead.

My fasting sugars are always between 93-103 (usually in the 98-100 range) (no medication as of yet) and I've had lots of different night time snacks to see if it matters. I can't find any pattern to it. Plain cottage cheese at night vs cocoa almonds vs a small dish of ice cream vs apple with peanut butter...no difference.

I'm have no problem with post meal numbers.
  • Carrots with hummus or ranch. I've also tried yogurt but it didn't change anything.

I'm not sure why they are waiting so long... I'm kind of worried if I do have it I'll be going two more weeks not knowing...
  • @MrsRahaim21 just follow the diet now if you are concerned. I wish that's what I had of done, they didn't diagnose me until 33 wks because they forgot.. It's not a hard food plan to follow at all

Yes I've been trying to follow a food plan by what I've read online just in case. I needed to eat better than I was anyway. I just havnt quite figured out exactly what I should be eating and how much but I'm getting better :)
  • Fasting numbers went up so they increased my glyburide to 7.5 but still not too bad. Of all the meals my lunch #s are hardest and ocassionally in the low 120s all other numbers unless I'm crazy bad are in the normal 90-110 range after 2 hrs. I even checked after eating cookies once and my number was 104.

  • First time checking in for this, but got my diagnosis about one month ago.  Initially I had to check fasting numbers and after each meal, so four times a day.  Did that for 2.5 weeks and my numbers after meals were decent - only hit over 120 twice and each time I could trace it to a lack of sleep (toddler at home was having nightmares for a few days), exercise and a slip in my diet.  My fasting numbers were slightly elevated about 50% of the time, so the NP told me only protein based evening snack and that seems to keep them under 95. They let me go down to checking only fasting and after one meal each day and no medications yet.  I feel like a science experiment - after my initial diagnosis I was a bit freaked out and cut a lot out of my diet (breads, rice, and pasta).  Now if I eat something that I didn't have during my initial 2.5 weeks of testing, I test even if I've already done my one meal test that day just to see how my body responds. I have definitely noticed that getting good sleep and some exercise has been the biggest factor for keeping my numbers in check - even if it is only a brisk walk I'm able to get in.

I have noticed a couple of times when I had a high number and I re-tested just to confirm it was correct, my next number was much lower (for example, one day after lunch it was 137 so I retested immediately and I was really at 108 and another day my fasting read 97 initially and 83 upon immediate retesting). Has this happened to anyone else?  I should probably do a third test in those cases with such a high range between readings but I hate wasting the little test strips and lances!

  • I have been diagnosed for a month. I can't seem to get my fasting numbers below 100. I average 95-108. It's frustrating. I go to a new de Monday and will probably get put on medication. I have been having a hard time eating so dang much. I find when I don't eat the full meal plan, my other numbers are a little higher. I have been pretty stressed out with this whole thing, trying to make sure I do everything I can for my little guy, but I feel like a failure. Today I'm 32 weeks. I keep trying but the last few days, my other numbers have been on the rise a bit.

It is totally easy to get frustrated and stressed - especially over fasting numbers. I had the hardest time with those. They were all over the place initially.  After changing to a protein only snack at night - usually a few almonds because I'm generally not hungry - my numbers have been in range. I also try to take a quick walk in the evening after dinner because I've noticed that helps.

I know it is easier said than done, but try to relax and don't beat yourself up - in my experience, the additional stress and anxiety I put on myself just messed with my numbers even more.

Just remember, you are not a failure! You are doing everything you can for your little guy by being aware, following the plan the best that you can (we all have our moments!), and going to your appointments. If you have to go on medication, it shouldn't be for too long.  Hang in there!

  • I found out I had gd about a week ago. Every since then I am trying to follow all the guidelines but I have been losing weight. I started off 140lbs last appointment I was 158lbs now down to 150lbs. I am 5'7. So I wasn't even close to over weight when I started. Anyone else losing weight? If I loose anymore weight I will be in contact with my doctor to see what is going on and what needs to change.
  • Lurking here, got my 3 hour results today and I passed but they still told me to watch my sugar intake. The things I struggle with most are breakfast and snacks. What are some healthy choices?

I eat Kirkland plain Greek yogurt with a teaspoon of honey, some berries and 1/3 C of Kind granola. The greek yogurt has a ton of protein in it to balance out the honey, berries and granola.
  • Hey ladies, I just got diagnosed on Friday and i have been checking my numbers (fasting and 2 hrs after meals) and my numbers looked great. Well I went out an got a different glucose monitor and checked my numbers against the old monitor (granted it's only 5 days old) and my numbers seem to be 20 points higher with the new monitor, still under what my dr recommends but not near as good as my other numbers were. My question is, have any of y'all experienced this? and What monitors do you use? This seems like it could be very dangerous for someone.
  • I have the Freestyle Insulinx

I use the Contour monitor. I had an Accucheck for a few days, but my insurance didn't cover it. I didn't notice much difference between the 2 monitors. BUT, I have taken my fasting sugars twice in a row (within 5 min and no food) and had numbers be 10 points different.

I have a friend who is Type 2, and he says that's pretty common for him to get different readings within a few minutes of each other.

    I think it's puzzling.

Haven't experienced a comparison between different monitors, but I've been double checking my numbers if the first one seems high.  I generally will re-wash my hands and use a different finger. When I have done this I have found that my second number can be anywhere from 2 to 20 points lower - usually it is in the 5 - 10 range for difference.  I have the OneTouch Ultra2.

  • @423ang I have the accucheck (well my new one) that's the one giving me high numbers. My other one is a true2go (gives me much lower readings) which was a cheap one bc I didn't have my script for one yet. Each time I tested against one another there were probably a few seconds between readings. I'm assuming the accucheck is more accurate (this is due to me feeling like anything that cost more should be better, definitely wrong way of thinking), although I wish it was the other way around. I've researched this and it says to be FDA approved they must be +/- 20% of actual blood glucose. That's a 40% difference! Crazy!!! @jenkbob thanks! I think I will try re-washing my hands and testing again next time. I feel like I'm becoming obsessed with pricking my fingers
  • Really confused doc had me monitor my sugar for a week went in today for a review and was told to monitor for another week but not to change my diet. Anyone else's doctor tell them not to change their diet after being diagnosed?
  • @Raymer2 my dr also said not to change my diet, but she did say to watch my carbs and sugar, which of course made me alter my diet. I went ahead and changed my diet bc I feel like I got diagnosed late (@ 30 weeks) I didn't want to spend more time eating foods that could potentially harm my babies. I think they have you eat what you normally would so you can see how your body reacts to the different items your used to eating. If I'm not mistaking some people do fine with certain types of carbs and/or sugars, so they are able to still eat those items and not have it effect their blood. Again, I'm new to this, so this is just from what I have read up on gestational diabetes.
  • Wasn't sure about starting a new post - I don't want to step on any toes, not really sure what the policy is - but I wanted to check in with the GD group to see how everyone is doing.

Have any of you had growth scans yet?  My doc doesn't want me to do one until 37 weeks because she says it would be too early to get a good indication of what baby's size would be closer to due date anyway. I'm 34.5 weeks now.  I'm not on medication, just controlling with diet and exercise. I've been measuring on track - at the 20 week AS, baby was measuring 2 weeks ahead in terms of arm and leg length, but everything else was right on target (hubby is tall and first baby was long, so that seemed normal). Fundal height measurements have been normal and I haven't gained a lot of weight. Doc said she wasn't concerned about me having a big baby because of past baby's weight, my minimal weight gain, and easily controlled blood sugars.  But of course I'm starting to worry about a giant baby!!

What is going on for the rest of you?

  • My Dr said that as long as my blood sugar stays in control than there wouldn't be anymore monitoring or early induction. My numbers have been really great so far except the past few days. I think my body may be fighting off something though.
  • @jenkbob, I'm starting to go in for weekly BPP's and NST's next week. I'll be 32 weeks. I"ll have a growth scan every 2 weeks after as well.

I'm on glyburide 2x a day, and my numbers have been ok. I've been getting a little relaxed w/ my eating, after being diagnosed at 10weeks.

Baby's health is so important to me that I'm still cutting out most carbs/sugars, but do allow myself a little cereal (special k or honey cheerios) before bed - 3/4 c or so.

  • @laurendutch Hope you aren't too sick. Whenever I feel even somewhat off for a day, whether it is lack of sleep or something else, my numbers seem to get a little wacky. Fortunately, they haven't been bad.  Since I was diagnosed, I've only had about 4 numbers that went over 120 2 hours after eating.

@starrysmile18, I feel you, I've been getting a little relaxed and I've only been at this for a little over one month. I have to commend you and anyone else who was diagnosed early for being able to maintain such strict standards!

I agree, keeping baby healthy is the number one concern, but I've also allowed myself a very small cheat here and there (but only on days I exercise). I do OK w/ a protein type cereal in the mornings, but my fasting numbers are not cooperative if I try anything like that at night. Took a couple of weeks to get that one figured out, now I have to stick to almonds. Lately I've been so tired though, I fall asleep before I get to my evening snack.

  • I'm 34.5 weeks and have a scan next friday. All I've been doing is monitoring my sugar levels and was diagnosed a little late. So far I'm not on any meds and doc doesn't seem to be worried about the numbers that were over the 120 because they weren't over by much. I'm measuring 1 week ahead as far as belly wise but again she's not concerened. But I can't stop freaking out because I'm terrified of having a big baby. I even had a dream where I had a baby thay was 9lbs 10oz ouch!

Haven't had any dreams like that yet, but I go back and forth with anxiety about baby being big. I know I'm overreacting since my doc doesn't think baby will be big. But my husband was nearly 10 lbs when he was born, and all the babies in his family were also in the 9 to 10 lb range. My family had average size babies. Our son was 7 lbs 11 oz and 22 in long, so he was lean, BUT his head measured like in the 95th percentile. I think I'm more nervous about that happening again.

This is my second pregnancy with GD and with the first I was on insulin, only before bed, and with this one it is diet controlled.

From the beginning I have found that the glucometers fluctuate and wonder how you're supposed to get an accurate reading. I have been seeing an endocrinologist and having an A1c blood draw monthly. Normal levels are 4-6 and I've been at 5 for the whole pregnancy.

Sometimes I wonder if I've been misdiagnosed because I've been eating pretty much what I want with normal numbers. Anyone else feel the same way?

Baby girl 1 was only 5lbs 10 oz (born at 36w 5d) and right now I'm 34w 4d and baby girl 2 is about 5lbs...
