The drink really wasnt as bad as everyone makes it seem, and I don't even like sweet stuff. I asked my dr about alternatives the only one they would allow was pricking my finger every day for the rest of my pregnancy. I would ask your dr if they're even open to alternatives.
I just did my test today and also did not find that drink to be so bad. Yes, it tastes like a sugary fake orange drink from childhood - but it was doable.
I also did the test today. The drink really isn't that bad. The best comparison I can make is to mcdonalds orange "pop" but a little more tangy. It's doable.
The orange drink isn't bad. Tastes like flat orange soda to me. Just chugged it and it was over with. Nbd. It is the waiting around in the doc office that is really no fun, imo.
I don't know what all the fuss is about I agree with the rest of the pp's on here and the drink is not bad at all and it's only a small bottle ... The not being allowed to eat before was the worst bit xx good luck
Last pregnancy I did Orange juice. I'm with a different practice this time around so did the Orange drink. It isn't bad at all but I understand some have issues with food coloring in it
My doctor said if I didn't want to do the drink, I could eat 28 jelly beans... but the big ones- not the jelly bellys. I just did the drink cause it seemed easier and less of a fuss.
The orange drink is seriously not that bad at all. Trust me, I'm the BIGGEST baby out there and I was able to handle it. I was afraid because everyone was making this big deal about it, but it wasn't bad AT ALL....
I also was not allowed to take an alternative. I had quite a few alternatives ready but my OB told me 'no.'
Same as PP's have said, I had the orange drink with my last pregnancy and this go round I had one that was fruit punch. They both reminded me of really sweet kool-aid, not my favorite but it was easy to drink.
The orange drink really isn't that bad, the lime is pretty gross so I would avoid if possible. All that being said, I was all ready to do the regular drink this time when my MW alerted me that the lab I go to has now approved an alternative, it's the Naked juice drink and it has to be the flavor Red Machine. I have to buy it before, keep it sealed and bring it to the test. She did warn me it's more to drink and needs to be empty in 5 min same as the regular drink, but 5 min will be enough time for me. I'm going to do it only because they offered the alternative to me and I would rather do a juice. But honestly, if she hadn't said anything I would have just gone the traditional route, it's not the end of the world!
I'm with a midwife and she does a food based test. She comes by first thing in the morning, pricks my finger for a blood test then we all have pancakes together (75mg carbs) then we have my regular 28 week appt and 2 hours after the first prick I get pricked again. So much better than sitting in a Drs office for an hour!
I did the fruit punch flavored one. It didn't taste horrible but it kinda made me nauseous for a bit after; probably because it was a lot of liquid in a short amount of time. Which ever you decide you will survive it good luck!
I asked my midwives if I could drink an alternative to the Glucola. They were ok with me taking Apple juice for a total of 50 grams of sugar. I got the little 365 juice boxes from Whole Foods and had two of those within the 5 minute period that you are given to drink up. It was really easy. I think any organic juice would do, as long as you drink the required amount of sugar, if you are trying to be conscious about your dietary restrictions.
Although I didn't think that the Glucola was that bad when I had it 10 years ago with my first pregnancy, I am glad that there are alternatives. It's not the taste of the drink, but all the crap in it. Obviously, it is not the kind of drink anyone would have unless required for a glucose test, just like I don't ever drink apple juice anyway, but I think it's a better option.
Hope this helps!

I think you can ask for a dye free drink. I fasted for 12 hours, had a blood draw, consumed a very large sugary breakfast, had a blood draw two hours later. I'm using a home birth midwife so I may have a few more options than your average physician's office. You may be able to eat a Hershey bar instead. I think glucola contains 50 grams (?) of carbs.
My dr was very open to alternatives! He suggested eating jelly beans, raw packets of sugar, he didn't care what I used, as long as it was 50 grams of glucose. I am going to drink pure maple syrup, since it is a sweetener my body is used to, and it's all natural.
At my clinic, they ask if you are allergic to citrus. I assume that means they have an alternative drink without the orange flavour and presumably without the orange colour. If your doctor isn't allowing you an alternative to the drink they provide, ask for the one they give to people with allergies. It seems like it would basically just be sugar water. Worth a shot anyways.

This. I also have the choice of McDonald's pancakes with syrup. I figured to just drink the drink.

I am very strict on my diet and do not like consuming artificial colors or refined sugars, so that is why I am doing an alternative. :-)
Good luck to all of you ladies!
