Become an U/S model!

I was really worried this morning because I havent seen babies in a few weeks so I googled "Ultrasound" and the city that I work in. It came up with a bunch of boutiques and a non-profit for pregnancies. I called the non-profit because it would be cheaper for an elective one and they made me an ultrasound model! With my doctor's permission, they will do FREE ultrasounds weekly to keep up the skills of their technicians.

This has been a godsend. I just wanted to see them moving and hear their heartbeats. We're having twins so my worry has doubled. Does anyone have any experience with this? It seems really awesome to any fellow moms that get anxious!

  • Not to be a nervous nelly but I would have to question couldn't that be a bit too much exposure for the LOs? Obviously if you have your dr's blessing it sounds great.

  • What a neat opportunity! I'm not into ultrasounds unless they're absolutely necessary, but everyone is different. I'm glad you get to see your babies AND help others at the same time. :) I always enjoy it when I'm asked if I'm willing to have a medical student either sitting in on or doing my prenatal appointment. I think it's awesome to be part of their education process!
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • I haven't asked my doctor yet but plan to make sure it is safe beforehand! I have read that ultrasounds are completely safe, but still want the official OK

I asked my dr about US because i kept getting told to not go to the 3d/4d places from a bunch of friends because of exposure... my dr said that US is just sound waves, just like a dolphin does in the water, and that it doesn't hurt the baby at all.

I don't believe that at all (not that your Dr said it,I just don't believe what he said) if you do an ultrasound on a dog with puppies there is a huge chance of those puppies getting absorbed or dissolving. I've seen it happen twice. They also use ultrasound technology to break down clots (or stones...I forget which) so I don't see how it's not harmful if done repeatedly on babies.
  • When you're high risk, they usually tend to give you more ultrasounds.. I'm not a Dr but my own opinion is that if US were harmful, why would those with the greatest risk of MC have them more frequently? I think your safe!

The ultrasounds they use for imaging and to breakup stones are vastly different frequencies. Trust your doctor, ultrasound imaging does not hurt the babies.

  • Ohhhhh that would make me so nervous.
  • Just talked to my doctor and he said he would advise against it. Though there haven't been any adverse side effects of frequent U/S scans, they don't know how harmful it could be. I have twins so I am already getting monthly scans, which is a lot more than many of the singleton moms on here, so I think we will live with the wait ;) Thanks for everyone's input!
