A Game: Words that could have been nice names if they didn't mean something terrible

So in the Worst Names I've Heard All Year thread, someone mentioned the name "Candida" which, of course, is a type of yeast...

BUT if it didn't carry that meaning, it might have been a decent name.

Others that come to mind: Listeria, Cholera...

And go.

  • So many medical terms work with this!

DH and I used to joke that we'd call our baby Taenia, Ascaris or Fasciola - after types of parasites!

Melaena/Melena is another one we used to joke about - it's basically poo that has digested blood in it which is black, tarry and particularly offensive to the nose.

  • That's a shame about Melena!  :-S

  • I was actually just thinking about this the other day (words that are pretty but wouldn't work as names)

Euglena - it's really just a single celled protist so it's not "terrible" but I wouldn't want to be named after it either

*this* thread is another reason that name spelling matters. You might think you're doing a cool twist on the name Melaina (or whatever the traditional spelling is), but your cutesy spelling is a medical term used to describe black poop due to digested blood

I actually did work with a woman named Candida. I'd never heard of the yeast association, which I think is more commonly used across the pond. I'd love Allegra if it weren't for the allergy medication.

My BFF in high school always thought Chlamydia would be a pretty name if it wasn't an STI. This was when we were reading a King Lear and Goneril's name sounds like gonorrhrea.
  • Aside from diseases and bacteria, I think Amity is a lovely name, if people didn't associate it with Amityville Horror. :(
  • Meconium
