Tips on drying up milk?

Ive decided to let my milk dry up before starting back to work because I don't think I will be able to keep up it. What tips do all you mothers have for the best way to go about this? And how long does it usually take before it's completely done?

Re: Tips on drying up milk?

  • Apparently taking an antihistamine causes breast milk to dry up rather quickly. I'm still breastfeeding and struggling to get my production back up to par because my doctor prescribed Allegra for my Eczema. I still feed every 2 hours but am only producing about 0.5oz from both breasts every 2 hours. Before I was producing about 4oz per breast. So I would stop feeding and pumping altogether and maybe take an antihistamine for a few days. Should be done in about 14 days I would think.

  • I've been using cold cabbage leaves in my bra, have hardly needed to pump since.
  • Limit stimulation. No baths and don't let them run under the hot water in the shower.

  • I heard you just express a lil to where you feel comfortable I done it and it worked but I still have milk but it dosent come out unless u suck it out
  • I just didn't let the water in the shower touch. I didn't breastfeed or pump. I was only uncomfortable for maybe 2 days. But it dried up after that.
  • Thank you everybody for all the tips!
  • I cut down pumps every couple of days. 3 a day down to morning & night then only before bed..it took about a week and a half. I also used cabbage to help w the pain..it really worked!
  • What if you produce a lot of milk and fill up quickly? Would you still recommend not expressing any milk... I really don't want to get masitis!
