Membrane sweep stories?

I am 37 weeks 5 days pregnant with my second child, 3-4 cm dilated, & at least 70% effaced. Because of high blood pressure, I have an induction scheduled for this Monday at 38 weeks 1 day with bedrest all weekend. The dr also did a membrane sweep this morning around 9:45 to get me going naturally this weekend. Have you ever gotten a membrane sweep before? Did it put you into labor? How soon? I've been feeling extra crampy ever since.

Re: Membrane sweep stories?

  • Yep I did with DD, my OB said even with out it she thought I was about to go into labor, and I had DD within 24 hours like she though. I was immediately crampy and then continued to be as active as possible that day and by that night I was 6 cm when I went to the hospital.

  • I had a membrane sweep at 38 weeks for the same reasons. I was at 2cm 80% and I cramped all day but never went into labor. I ended up just being induced.
  • I went into labor within 24 hours but had very unproductive contractions and needed pitocin after 30 hours of labour.

  • I had my membranes swept at 37 weeks because I was already 3 cm dilated and 50% effaced.  It didn't work, so when I went back at 38 weeks, they were swept again (still 3 cm but 80% effaced).  I saw the other OB and she was much more aggressive sweeping my membranes than the main OB was at 37 weeks.  I bled for the next few days and had period-like cramps.  A little less than 3 days later, I woke up with contractions.  I had read that usually you go into labor about 72 hours after having your membranes swept.  Seemed to work for me the 2nd time.  Good luck! :)

  • Had it done with my first-- It hurt, followed by pretty consistent contractions; however, no labor ensued. Seems like an unreliable method to start labor, even though we're often desperate for anything late in our pregnancies!

I'd never heard of a membrane sweep until I joined the communities on this app... Great information!
  • I had 3 and none of them worked! One at 38 weeks, one at 39 weeks and one at 40 weeks. My nearly 11 pound kid had to be induced after my water broke at 40+3. I hope this works for you GL!
  • I had it done several times in past pregnancies.  It never worked.  I always had it done 41+ weeks along.  I only did it to feel I had tried everything to go into labor before agreeing to be induced.  All my babies have been past due.  Many had to be induced because they were far past due, no signs of labor and my fluid was starting to go low etc.  Each time I would say after having a sweep "boy that hurt like mad, made me feel terribly crampy for days, made me bleed, and all for nothing! I will never do that again!" however, once I am over due and it seems induction is coming, I always go back to getting it done "just in case" it just might work this time!!
  • I had it done with my 3rd, 4th and 5th pregnancies, and it worked all three times. I always went into labor the same night that I had the sweeping done. I do know that if you get it done too soon, less than 3cm, it doesn't usually work. At least that's what my midwife told me. Good luck!
  • Im 40+6 i am 2.5cm dilated and 50% effaced i had my membrane sweep today at 2 and its now 11:15 i still haven't had any bleeding or contractions. Tomorrow morning ill go on my two mile walk hoping that will change something. I really dont want to be induced but if I dont have her by Tuesday doc is probably going to set up my induction date
  • I had it done with my 2nd. I was 39weeks,3days. I don't remember my dilation, 2 cm I think. I had timeable contractions an hour and a half later and DD was in my arms that evening.
