Full name for "Hattie"?

We are expecting our second daughter and have a few names we like, one of which is Hattie. I don't want to just name her Hattie, tho, as I'd like it to be a shorter form of a longer name. Right now the only options I'm finding are Harriet and Henrietta, and I'm not sure I want to stick our daughter with either of those. I like the old-fashioned names (sister is Georgia) but feel she could be teased for Henrietta. Does anyone have any creative ideas?

Mathilda, Heather, Charlotte, Catherine? That's tough.

  • I'm only finding that is a nickname for harriet and Henrietta ...

Can you go with a different FN and use Hattie as a MN and just all her that?

  • I don't think there's anything wrong with Harriet, and I think it goes well with Georgia. I also don't think there's anything wrong with just naming her Hattie- If that's what you plan to call her anyway why bother struggling to find a longer name that you aren't really as into?

  • I think it sounds fine as a stand alone name. If you haven't found one you like, I'd just go with Hattie by itself. No different really than someone who names their daughter Katie instead of Katherine with a nickname Katie.

  • Haddie is on my list of names as well but i don't plan on it being a nick name, I'm using it as is.
  • I love Haddie, I wish my Husband did too. Luckily we are having a boy so there wasn't an argument (lol). I think Haddie is a great nickname for Hadley <3
  • I love Harriet though.
  • Thanks, guys! I hadn't thought of Mathilda! And I really like Harriet. Plus there's a local lake nearby that we like to spend time at, so that has significance. I don't think she'll get picked on for Harriet, it's Henrietta I'm worried about. We may just do Hattie as a standalone name. I was just wondering if others had ideas that I had missed.
  • Charlotte.
  • I would vote Harriet or Henrietta with nn Hattie just so that she has something more 'professional' to fall back on as an adult if she wanted it. I grew up with a good friend who had the legal name 'Jenny,' and she hated it as an adult because everyone thought she was a little kid on resumes and in her professional career. She legally changed it to Jennifer when she got married to stop having to deal with it.

I've had several students named Henrietta and I've not noticed them having issues with being picked on for their names.
  • As a person who has a "real name" but goes by a nn...it gets super old having to correct people. Then you get all confused on which name you should give for different reasons. It's annoying.

So if you plan on calling her Hattie then just name her Hattie. Keep it simple.
Please excuse typos....auto correct hates me. =)
