S/O skin to skin--- C Section Mommas.

Just wondering as my first was vaginal and had complications, I didn't get skin to skin until day 6 of his life...

This baby will be a C section due to the previous complications from DS. Do you get skin to skin even if you're having a c section? I've read that some doctors give LO to dad, but I'd rather take that opportunity to have contact with baby!

  • It depends on your hospital. I did with my daughter, it was not immediately but within 5 mins she was on my chest and she stayed there for hours. She went to recovery with me and my husband and then back to our room.

  • I would ask you doc about your hospital's policies at your next app. It varies a lot, but I think more and more hospitals are encouraging skin-to-skin for csection babies. Whether it's mum or dad would likely depend on your preferences (assuming your hospital gives you the ok).

  • I had an emergency C-section and DD was only away from me about 5min. Then skin to skin while I was stiched and then again in recovery, till they had to take her just to double check and make sure everything was okay. But we are able to get in about 15 to 30 minutes of skin to skin and some initial breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor and also look up gentle c section. If your c-section is planned there shouldn't be any major complications in skin to skin could definitely happen.
  • Yea it depends on if you have the epidural or a spinal which will knock you out..I'm pretty sure most hospitals do the epidural. With my first they took her out, my hubby cut the cord and then helped clean her off and then they placed her on my chest for the remaining time and then into the recovery room too so it was for a while.
  • My pressure tanked on the table so they sent LO with my husband while they worked on me. I has her skin to skin in less than 20 minutes even with my BP issues. Hopefully, this time will be a bit quicker!

  • Google gentle csection.... It is a new thing going around that gives baby to the mommy right away. I was going to ask my ob about it at my next appointment.
  • It really depends on the hospital. My labor and delivery is on a separate floor from maternity. So I will get to do skin to skin about an hour later :(

Are you thinking of a spinal/epidural from general? A spinal will not "knock" you out. You will still be conscious.
