*update* monistat during the first trimester

Hi ladies,

I called the doctor today about itching, some yellow discharge, and positive UTI test for leukocytes but not nitrate. They had me speak with the nurse who said it sounds like I have a yeast infection and to go get Monistat 7. I've read some mixed reviews about taking this during the first trimester and I'm nervous about it. Has anyone else been directed to do so by their doctor?

  • Yes. They said to use monistat 3 or 7. I used 3 (suppositories). Just don't insert the applicator all the way - only 1/2 way. Used it weeks ago and all is fine!

  • Yes I had the same problem when I was trying and not sure if I was pregnant that month. They said as along as you don't take the oral pill it's ok to do.
  • I've been taking monistat 7 for 3 days. Today I woke up and my pad had pink and red blood. I'm freaking out, the doctor on call said if I fill a pad in 30 minutes to go to the ER. Praying it doesn't turn into that. Anyone else bleed from using monistat?
  • Nope, no bleeding. Are you only inserting the applicator 1/2 way? If not you could have irritated your cervix and caused bleeding. Or it could be completely unrelated to the monistat.

Yes, I've only been doing it half way. I do have a sensitive cervix, and experienced spotting around 6 weeks. I'm now 10 weeks, but it was heavier than the past times which is why it has me worried. Maybe even tho I'm only doing it half way, since I'm more prone to bleeding it still irritated it? I really hope that's all it is. I just had a miscarriage in December.

  • I was put on Monistat 7 right around 6 weeks and started spotting. After a few days, the spotting became bright red and I freaked out. The doc got me in for an ultrasound that day and everything was totally fine!! I could see baby's heartbeat and everything. The doc said that while the cream is safe, it can be really harsh and cause the spotting.

Please be careful though - they did a culture while I was there and it ended up being a bacterial infection instead of yeast. I would highly recommend getting a swab to make sure you're treating the right thing!

Thank you, that helps a lot. My next apt is the 23rd but I'm going to call on Monday if I'm still bleeding and see if they can get me in next week instead. I told the OB on call I was going to stop taking the monistat until I saw a doctor and she thought that was a good idea.
