Mirror / touching head when crowning?!?!?

Just started filling out hospital paperwork and a birthing wish list. A couple of the questions ask about using a mirror during delivery and wanting to touch the head while crowning. This kinda freaks me out just reading about it, but I wanted to get some opinions from stm's out there. Anyone else use these?

  • Giving birth is terrifying to me, I'm trying to dissociate myself, that would just make it worse for me!! I'd rather not feint while giving birth because I actually saw what was comming out of me!! Lol. But I'm sure it helps some moms.
  • I would love to help pull him/her out. I don't want to see what is happening though.
  • Um, no. I wasn't interested in pulling my DS out or using a mirror.

    To each their own though.

  • I used a mirror and felt the baby with my first two. The third baby I was exhausted because I hadn't slept for 2 days and so I just said "no, I am too tired, lets just get this baby out!" Since this is the last baby I plan to have, I will probably ask for the mirror!

  • No, no chance! Not for me!
  • I didn't even know you could do this! I want to! I think it would be a great bonding experience! Knowing me I'll probably see him coming out and drop the mirror and cry lol I'm a softie I cry at everything!
  • I had the mirror towards my final pushes but I closed my eyes with each push, which defeated the purpose! I wouldnt want to pull a baby out and mess anything up more down there. I would like to try and use the mirror again.

They hold the mirror for you ;)
  • They offered me the mirror (I declined) and also kept pressuring me to touch his head to encourage me that he was almost there. Nope didn't do anything for me, no feelings of emotion over it.

  • Definitely not for me!
  • At first I said no to the mirror but then the midwife said it might help direct my pushing efforts if I could see the progress. SHE WAS SO RIGHT. I highly recommend the mirror. I could see what sort of pushing moved the baby and what sort didn't help at all, it was extremely useful when pushing with an epidural!
  • I watched my mom give birth to my youngest brother when I was in high school, it was an amazing experience. I plan on being in the room when my best friend delivers in July. I am thinking that if I can handle her delivery I will ask for the mirror. I also would love to feel the babies head. I could very well chicken out though, who knows!
  • No thank you and no thank you!

  • I touched my DDs head and it was very encouraging as I knew I didn't have too much pushing left!
  • Nope!  Not for me!  I will trust the doctor to give me a play-by-play, if need encouragement about how close she's getting.
  • Oh my gosh, I had no idea this was a thing. Very interesting and very not for me. I don't handle blood well.
  • I had no idea this was a thing either and I'm on my third!  However, I did only have to push for about 20 mins with the first and about 5 mins with the second...that was SUPER lucky I know...so maybe that is why but my doctor never even mentioned it to me and no one had a mirror...I don't think that I could have watched anyways...I close my eyes when I push!
  • I plan to deliver my own kiddo

  • I chose to use the mirror but honestly i only looked at it a couple times because i was too focused on giving birth. I felt his head and it was really amazing. I had an epidural so it was almost like seeing it and feeling his head was the only proof i had that i was actually getting something accomplished by all the pushing. Its not for everyone though. Some people are a little grossed out by it. Just like how i said hell no when they asked if i wanted to see the placenta.
  • I'm an EMT , (had 3 of my own babies) and I've helped on several births and it's good but with my own I have one objective and that is " get the hell out of my body" I'll bond after that ;) that being said I have many friends who catch there own babies and love it!! My last two babies were 9lbs and 10.5 lbs... Maybe I would feel different if they weren't so hard to get out!
  • My husband has his mind set on being the one to pull him out. I personally don't want to see or touch anything. Who knows though in the moment I may change my mind! Haha
