When to stop taking a bath?

at what week is it a bad idea to take baths?! Or rather it's just safer not to take them anymore

Re: When to stop taking a bath?

  • I wasn't aware that it was ever not safe to do... I only take showers though so this could definitely be ignorance on my part. What would make it unsafe?

  • I've never heard of this. I took a bath Saturday night after cleaning all day and it was heavenly. I'd say just make sure you're careful sitting down and standing up. Seems to me the biggest hazard would be the fall risk. My doctor and book have certainly not recommended I not take baths.

  • Yes I would think the only risk would be a fall risk - my Dr certainly hasn't told me not to have a bath whenever I want. A bath sounds fantastic.

  • I hope never. I take a bath nearly every day. I just try not to let it get too hot. In our birthing class they said you can take them during labor. As long as your doctor hasn't told you not to, I don't know why it would be a problem. I do think DH might have to start helping me get out soon, it's not so easy to do on my own these days.
  • The only thing that I would think would be a risk is if you bathed without your mucus plug. I was laboring in a bathtub and hot tub (temp turned down to 98-99 deg). No risk because i still had my mucus plug and my water hadn't broke.

I've never heard of having to stop taking baths... I guess the only reason to stop would be if you can't get out of the tub by yourself. That's me! I haven't been able to take a bath for a month!
  • I just talked to my midwife about taking a bath during labor and she said that was a great idea so I am pretty sure you can take baths your entire pregnancy. Just make sure the water isn't too hot.
  • I'm taking a bath now, I've been just soaking for about 30 minutes now and I'm pretty sure I'm breathing very heavily at the moment because I'm a little toasty now hahaha. Time to get out, but it was relaxing. I've heard nothing against taking a bath so to each their own :)

Never stop taking baths! they are wonderful!

Yes!!  This!!  I have heard there are risks once your water breaks, but it's been years since I've heard that and can't remember the source and with all the water births I would assume it's pretty much a safe bet.
  • I take a nice hot bath every night usually helps me relax. I do need to have a good push up to get out though I know hot tubs over 110 degrees for more than like 15 minutes are conceening. But that is really hot.
  • I was able to labor in a tub after my water broke in the hospital...it was nice

Same here! They kept me down to about 20 minutes in the tub, but it was amazing.

  • I agree with all of the PPs.  Just make sure you can get in and out safely so you don't fall and don't let the water get too hot.  I have been taking warm baths my entire pregnancy...it's the only thing that seems to help with the back pain for me.  I hope you relax and enjoy!

If my water breaks my buns are headed to the hospital not the tub!!
  • I still take baths...they are very relaxing for me. Especially when my back hurts
  • Take one almost every night to help me fall asleep!
  • Also I just bought a giant thing of Epsom salt for my bath times. Hello relaxation, now once lo is here it will be back to having a nice glass of chilled white wine too. :)
  • I'm jealous of all you ladies able to take baths...our current apartment only has a shower. It has a bench In it I can sit down on, but it will never compare to a good bath. So for the first little while til we move baby baths will probably have to be in the sink.
  • Last time I took a bath I got really nauseous and dizzy And had to get out. Maybe it was too hot, I don't know. But I've never heard anything about not taking baths!

    You and me both!!! :)
  • I specifically just mega cleaned the master bath, including a shower and tub scrub down, so that I could unwind in a nice hot bath today.

@valeriemarie24 I had an apartment like that for about 2 years. Junkiest shower ever. And it didn't have the benefit of a bench. I feel ya, girl. DH and I used to rent a hotel room with a whirlpool tub every now and then just for the chance to relax in a tub.

  • I look forward to my baths especially when my 19 mo is acting like a crazy pants.. Haha.. I was surprised that my midwife approved hot baths but I'm thankful for them!!!
  • I'm 32 wks. My OB just told me to take a warm bath today actually. To help ease the pressure and pain I've been having in my lower abdomen and hips. You don't want it too hot. Your internal temp shouldn't be too hot but you can still take a bath.

  • When your water breaks. Or, when you're crowning...

Unless you're having a water birth, then never.

  • Thanks ladies!! I heard rumors that later in the pregnancy you shouldn't take baths but clearly that's not an issue and I may look like an idiot getting out but it's totally worth it for me. I just need to buy a bath pillow for my back and I'll be set ;) I was just curious if there were any hidden rules but I guess crowning or if your water breaks it makes sense!!

YES. I love my nightly baths. Although I'm with the ladies who are going to start needing help getting out. Told hubby to be aware if I need him, lol.
  • All you ladies out there taking baths, do yall put any bath salts or relaxing soap in your baths? My friend just gave me some lavender distressing bath salts but I'm not sure if they are safe.
