Baby measuring small at 27 weeks worries about IUGR

I have been seeing a high risk doctor since 27weeks due to low amniotic fluid and low measurements. At 27w 5d baby was still under 2 lbs. I have been checks several times a week since then for fluid but do not get to see if baby's weight has progressed until next week. They really haven't told me what would happen if the baby measures small again at our next measurement. He did say, that would not be good, but have really no more information. Is anyone has had this experience? At what point do they have you hospitalized for low weight and low growth? Any advice is appreciated!

  • I was hospitalized at 29w5d with low fluid, but my fluid was less than 5 which is considered oligohydramnios officially. Baby has IUGR in regards to weight and was only weighing 2lb8oz at 29w5d. They are rechecking her growth 2 weeks later at 31w5d, and if she hasn't grown at all I will have a c section at 32 weeks per maternal fetal medicine and my regular OB. If she has grown at that scan, even just a little bit, they will let her keep baking in the hope that we can make it to 34 weeks. I think it really all depends on how low your fluid is because that is a indication of how well your placenta is functioning - aka how well baby is getting what he/she needs.

  • Ok that is helpful! My fluid was at a 7, but I am guessing the biggest reason they are concerned is the baby is not growing and low fluid may indicate some issues with the placenta. I will be almost 30 weeks when I am measured again. So now I am thinking that if she hasn't grown much and is barley hitting that 2lb mark, then they will want to hospitalize and watch closer. Do you know if they are hospitalizing you mainly due to your extremely low fluid or the weight of the baby?

So nice to have a little more input! Thank you!
  • They hospitalized me mainly due to low fluid. From what my doctors have said, in order to be monitored on an outpatient basis with home bedrest, my fluid would have to be over 6 for 3 days in a row. The highest I have been was 5.2, but we have been averaging around 4. The lower your fluid usually correlates with lower weight gain - due to the placenta. So if you are maintaining fluid >5-6 I would hope you would see some growth! Good luck to you and little one!!
  • Ok! Thank you so much for the info! Good luck to you and I hope you are able to keep that baby in for a long time! :)
