6 am wake up

Any tips on getting the baby to sleep past 6 am? I'm going back to work next week and really would like to be able to shower in the morning without getting up at 5 - daycare opens at 8.

He is 14 weeks, 16+ pounds. He currently goes to bed around 8 or 8:30, gets up two or three times a night. Rarely once. It's a rough phase.

Re: 6 am wake up

  • My LO goes to bed around 9 pm and wakes at 5 to eat but then goes back to sleep until around 8. Maybe try keeping him up a little later, when he wakes up to eat keep the room dark, keep talking to him a minimum, try rocking him back to sleep.

Sorry these ideas probably aren't very helpful. Maybe someone else will have some good ideas.

It's probably the 4 month sleep regression.

  • I've considered trying to keep him up later. He gets really cranky so perhaps I'll try a later afternoon nap. He's been napping really great, so that might be part of the problem. He's gone from 30-40 minute naps to hour or two naps. That'll be great for his daycare but not for me!!

Maybe talk to your pediatrician about baby's sleep habits and if they feel you NEED to start sleep training at this stage.

Also be honest with them that (based on what you wrote above) this the matter is simply just so you don't have to get up at 5am to shower (which you **could** also do the night before).

  • I also would love it if LO would sleep past 5am! I've gotten him to 6am a couple times this week, but only bc he woke at 4am. Good luck!

  • Yes, it is for convenience I'll admit. But, why not? I have thick hair that doesn't dry well, so showering at night is always difficult. I have much better hair if I shower in the morning. :-)

Anyway, going to bed later worked amazingly! I put him down for a nap at 5:45pm (a fourth nap). His last nap was only 35 minutes and he was yawning and staring off into space. It took 30 minutes for him to fall asleep, probably because we hadn't napped at that time before. I had a nice leisurely dinner with my husband (even though the chicken was overcooked since it took so long for him to go to sleep!) Then we woke him after he'd slept for forty minutes. I didn't want it to be dark out when he woke so he'd know it was a nap.

He was sleepy and mellow, but we all hung out until about 8:10 when he started showing signs that it was ready for bed. So we went through our bedtime rputine. Pajamas, lotion, mobile time (dance party! He was really excited), then boob and bed. He slept from 8:45 till 3:40, then again until 7!! He did wake up at 6, but looked at his hands for a bit and went back to sleep. It was amazing.

I think perhaps he was getting overtired before bed. Even with the earlier bed time it was 3-4 hours awake since his last nap so his dad could see him. This will work much better, although unless he sleeps in the car it'll be hard for him to nap at that time right when he gets home from daycare. We will see!

It was really nice to sleep last night. I'm sure things will change again soon, but for now, yay.

Is what I've done considered sleep training? I put him to sleep when he was tired each time. Except for waking him after 40 minutes (which I did by simply turning off his noise machine and letting him gently wake), I don't consider it very invasive. In any case, we all go more sleep so it's great to try and tweak things so that happens.

My LO does that, too. I'm sure most babies their ago do but it's so stinking cute!!

  • My LO is often awake at 4:30. Happened this morning and he wanted to be awake, so I just got up and then he fell asleep while I was in the shower. So now he's snoozing peacefully and I'm up and exhausted. (:|
