Can the heart beat be too faint to see?

I'm 9 weeks and today I went to my first dr appointment today and we didn't see the heart beat. Could it be that the baby's heart beat was just too faint go see it or do you think that I should take the drs advise and get the D&C?

Re: Can the heart beat be too faint to see?

  • Im very sorry for your potential loss. I believe at nine weeks there should be an easy to hear heartbeat but others who have been through this would know more than me. As for the D&C, were you given the option to allow things to take their course naturally?

  • Yes the dr said it could possibly happen naturally it I can have the D&C it was up to us. I opted for the natural way. We are going to wait 2 weeks and if it hasn't happened then we'll go back go the drs.
  • Did you have a transvaginal ultrasound? By 9 weeks you should be able to see the heartbeat clearly. Or did they try with the Doppler device externally?

  • Yeah, was it ultrasound or Doppler?

  • I had a vaginal ultrasound. I'm trying to stay positive because I've read on other webpages some women didn't see a heart beat for 12 weeks even after the dr said they didn't have one..

I have honestly never heard of a viable pregnancy where you could not see the heartbeat with a vaginal ultrasound at nine weeks. I'm so sorry. The same thing happened to me. I had another ultrasound a week later to be sure then I had the d&c.

How big was the baby measuring?

Eta: it is possible to be off on your dates if you ovulated late. I am assuming you were not charting your temperature. What date did you get your bfp?

  • The baby measured 9 weeks. The dr said the baby was a perfect size. I tracked my ovulation dates by using a chart and I didn't check my temperature. My first positive test was 2/19 it was 24 days after the first day of my period.

Well, I'm really sorry, but the heartbeat should be detectable about 2 weeks after the positive test.

Hoping for the best. I haven't heard of not hearing the heartbeat, but I've never researched it.
If the measurements are good, that sounds promising.

    Good luck
