12 weeks & still no real confirmation of baby.

I'm 12 weeks, ftm, & I haven't seen nor heard my baby yet. I get my first US when I'm 20 weeks, which means I see & find out the gender all at once. which is exciting but frustrating being that I have NO patience. Monday I finally hear the heartbeat & that will be my first 'baby confirmation' in 7 weeks since I took my urine test.
makes me sad seeing 8+ week US from friends & I'm in my second trimester & still nothing to see. :(

Re: 12 weeks & still no real confirmation of baby.

  • Where are you from that you haven't had an ultrasound yet? I heard my babies heartbeat at my first (and only so far) ultrasound. Are they going to do it on a fetal doppler?

I would be very aggravated if I were you.

  • I'm 11 weeks today and I still haven't seen or heard my baby eithet!! Went to the doc Monday and he couldn't find the HB said not to worry I was still a little early and that all my levels were great!! Still kinda bummed though because I have been ready some mom's on here hearing the HB as early as 7 or 8 weeks. Good luck to you hopefully time will go by pretty fast so you can hear and see the baby.
  • Different practices do different things. Im 9w5d and have had 4 u/s already...but I am high risk for a few reasons. If you had a history of losses I think they'd keep a closer eye on you. If you purchased a home doppler you'd for sure be able to get some reassurance that way.
  • I also haven't had a true confirmation of pregnancy except the two sticks test I did. I'll hear the heartbeat a week from today at 12wk 3days and then wont have a US until 20wks. The nurse I talked with said a lot of insurances are now only covering 1 US unless complications arise and that is why they wait until 20wks to do one at the clinic I'm going to. Still a bummer though. This is my first and I'm starting to make myself nervous about next weeks appt and being able to hear thw heartbeat.
  • I had one faint positive test. And I haven't had anything since then, not even the violent morning sickness which usually assures me that I am pregnant. Also, I'm in the US. :) My midwives don't go overkill when it comes to early appointments and ultrasounds. I don't even GET the 20 week ultrasound. It's not covered, so I see my babies for the first time when they're born. Honestly, if you read all of the posts on here about early testing/ultrasounds, you'll see that these often cause more stress for the mother than reassurance. I know that there are some great doctors out there, but to me it looks like they're just trying to make as much money as they can or they have a weird obsession with finding "possible" but very improbable issues. Nothing can be done if something goes wrong this early anyway! It annoys me. ;)

Hearing the heartbeat is always the best feeling after waiting so many weeks. I'll have my first appointment on Monday too and I am definitely excited.
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • I haven't seen or heard bump yet either. I had my first OB appointment last week (10weeks) and she didn't want to try the Doppler as often its not reliable that early. As I am already anxious about having no symptoms, we both felt trying with the Doppler and risking not finding a HB would only add more stress for me. I am having my genetic screening next week and will have an ultrasound....I am nervous and excited to finally get some confirmation. I haven't been able to feel pregnant or tell anyone (other than my hubby) since I am terrified that it's no real yet.
I do agree with @ClaireBear90 that too many scans can often lead to stress about a problem that cannot be prevented this early in pregnancy....but it seems that I stress about it even without the scan. Sigh.
  • I'm in a similar boat. I'm 11 weeks today, and I haven't had an US or heard the baby's heartbeat. I'm especially nervous because my symptoms have mostly gone away this week, even though I've read that's normal towards the end of the 1st trimester. I'm finally getting an ultrasound on Monday, but the waiting has been hell.

If you live close to a college that has ultrasound tech classes, the students usually need women to practice on. You could call your local college/university to see if that's the case.

Good luck & I hope you hear a strong heartbeat on Monday!

  • I'm 10.5 weeks and have had two already! I dont blame you....I couldn't wait that long either. But I was super paranoid and had to have confirmation. I heard the heartbeat and saw the little bean at 6W6D. But I had to ask to have an ultrasound done--she was just going to do bloodwork. Maybe your insurance doesn't cover that many? I know mine only covers a few, but I would rather pay the doctor's fee than go without knowing.

  • You're almost there!  I heard my baby's heartbeat for the first time at a little over 12 weeks, but I considered the positive pregnancy test (and two missed periods) as confirmation rather than the doppler.  That is just an extra, wonderful treat.  I opted to do the first trimester screening because my insurance covers it and I'm getting close to 35, but the norm is to wait until 20 weeks.  Had the ultrasound this morning, and it was awesome!  It does surprise me that so many women on this board have had so many, earlier, ultrasounds, but I'm assuming many of them are higher-risk pregnancies.
  • The university or local college is a great idea. Another would be to pay for an ultrasound. There are lots of private ultrasound clinics that will do it, with a video and photos and in 4D.

It's normal to only have one ultrasound, the anatomy scan at 20 weeks, during the entire pregnancy if there are no complications. Some doctors do more.
  • I'm not high-risk, but my husband and I weren't trying and I'm bad about tracking my cycle, so she did the first ultrasound to determine gest. age. Many women on here are on top of their cycles, so they wouldn't need the first! Hope it helps! Either way, you're almost there! :)

  • There are places where I live that do elective ultrasounds for about $50. We are doing one of those to find out the genders of our twins. Might be worth the cost to make you feel better if you can find one.
  • In Greece its standard procedure to have u/s in every app. My 4th and also NT scan is on wednesday at 12w5d.
  • I'm 9 weeks today. Last Tuesday, was my first appt but only for lab work (blood and urine). I will have an us on April 6th and meet my ob then, the last appt was just with her assistant. Basically they told me if nothing is wrong I won't hear from them between now and the US, which is scary because I'm living in extreme fear and anxiety for 2 weeks waiting. So fingers crossed :) If you are upset with not getting an earlier ultrasound, call insurance and see of they will even cover it. If they won't, there are places that will do them for out of pocket that might be cheaper than at your ob office without insurance covering it. But honestly, all drs are different and have different views on US. I feel that this early is just an extra perk for some of us, but even having an early US isn't going to change what may or may not happen.
  • Second trimester does not start at 12 weeks

But yeah the waiting stinks. I have my first US at 12 weeks
