Decelerated Heartbeat

Evening April Mommas! I wanted to see if anyone else was having the same issue.

Earlier this week I went to the hospital due to some leakage. I thought I broke my water and I started feeling contractions for the first time. Come to find out that my water is intact and I was having Braxton hicks. Bad news was that the baby's heart rate was showing signs of slight deceleration when I was coming out of a contraction. They thought that he wasn't getting enough oxygen and possibly pushing on the cord so I was monitored for 8 hours both on and off oxygen. They released me in the early morning hours and told me that everything looked good but they couldn't tell me why there were some decelerations.

Today I had my 37 week appointment (officially 38 weeks on Friday) and during my NST they noticed the deceleration again. So it was back to L&D for more monitoring. After only two hours this time they sent me home telling me the baby looks beautiful and his tracing is just fine. I am keeping myself hydrated and my LO is moving around plenty.

We are putting our faith in the doctors but it is concerning to have this same issue come up twice in two days. Has anyone else experienced this? I am now going to be monitored twice a week at my doctors office to make sure that he is ok but I have this feeling that this is going to keep happening and no one seems to know why.

Re: Decelerated Heartbeat

  • I'm a FTM and have no experience. I'm glad that they are keeping an eye on it though. Obviously I would assume you know to pay attention of LO activity declines. Otherwise I wish you the best of luck and hope you get answers and that baby is healthy!

My first baby had heart decelerations during labor. The cord was wrapped around her neck 2x when I delivered her. Just keep an eye on your LO's movements and call your Dr if you have any concerns.

  • I don't have experience with this but sending positive thoughts your way.. ❤️
  • INSIST on an ultrasound to check if the cord is around LO neck. They can bill it as medically necessary and insurance will cover it. Do not keep stressing! They can easily do an US and get you some answers!!!! I got one this week (36wk) just to check the babies weight so i am positive they can do it for you. I would be a neevous wreck if I were you. Prayers to you and keep us updated!
  • I'm sorry, that's scary! I don't have experience with this, but did end up with an emergency c-section with my first because of heart rate deceleration (not cord related, he just wasn't tolerating contractions). If that were happening now you can be sure I would not be going home but would insist baby be monitored more unless they could explain to me why they weren't concerned and convince me I shouldn't be either.

Like PP said, it's perfectly reasonable for you to insist they do an ultrasound to check the cord. If that's not the issue, they should be able to explain to you exactly why this is happening and why it isn't a concern.
  • Thank you all for your comments.

I had three ultrasounds done between all visits and the cord is not around his neck. They think it has to do with his positioning during contractions - it's odd because it doesn't happen with every contraction - they just noticed several instances over the course of the first three hours on Monday's visit. He may be pressing on it slightly - but after 2 hours of monitoring yesterday they didn't see any deceleration and sent me home.

I have a call with my doctor today to discuss in more detail and see whether induction should be out of the question. In the meantime hubby and I are ready to go to the hospital if we don't feel movement during a 1-2 hour span. Fortunately my little guy must know I am a mess - he has been moving all around this morning.
  • So it's been a long week - Yesterday I was back in the hospital for more monitoring after my check in monitoring showed decelerations again. Now they are telling me it looks fine. Spoke with the MFM specialist and she doesn't want to induce me as all of my tests show a healthy developed baby. They can't come up with a reason for the random decelerations so we are going to be monitored again today.

When I read about all of the high risk Mommas and what they go through I hardly feel like I can complain but this has certainly thrown us through a loop.

Thank everyone again for your kind words.
