Gestational diabetes

I was diagnosed on Friday with GD. I'm 12 weeks today. I went to the gestational diabetes class yesterday. I'm so overwhelmed. Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this? I started the diet yesterday afternoon. This has stolen a lot of my excitement.

Re: Gestational diabetes

  • I totally feel you on this. Just don't let the bad news take your excitement away! I found out I had GD around 12 weeks as well. My tests results were off just by a little bit. I was so upset, I cried. Then I really wanted a donut :) and cried a little more cause I can't have one! Dealing with it was so hard at first but over time it gets easier. Luckily, I'm not on insulin regularly. I was also able to enjoy some meals without the extra carbs and sugar. All I keep thinking about is what's best for my baby. That's my motivation right there.
  • My test was really high. My blood sugar is still high and my OB said I might have to go in medicine. I am glad it gets easier. Thank you.

  • I had GD with my first child about three years ago and it was easy at first.  I controlled mine by diet.  At the last two months it got worse where I couldn't control it by diet.  I had to take a pill called Gluberide (It might be misspelled).  I got chewed out by my doctor all the time when the whole time it wasn't me and what I was eating.  It does spoil the excitement a little but you can still eat what you want just a little bit of it.  I made Fridays or Saturdays where I ate something I really wanted to eat and it was one thing.  With this child, I flunked my one hour again and now I'm waiting on the results from my three hour.  I am only 16 weeks starting today.  I wish you well.
  • GD is hard. It makes you obsess about your meals, your numbers, and jealous of pregnant women who get to eat what ever they want. I was diagnosed at 9 weeks. Am at 17 weeks. I had a bad reaction to the glyburide that landed me in the ER. Now am on lantus and my numbers are all over the place. The only thing that helps is getting extra dr visits to hear my little girls perfect heart beat. It's only then that it all seems worth all the struggle. I'd pass up a million cinnamon rolls to have her be a perfect healthy little baby in my arms
  • I was diagnosed at about 9 weeks. Although it did get easier when I would just think about keeping baby healthy, now at 26 weeks, I am having a very hard time. I am still fortunately controlling it by diet but it is getting harder and harder to say no to the sugary/high carb foods. I try to keep my meals as close to the suggested carbs but I have been cheating quite frequently inbetween meal testings. Good luck to you, I know how hard it can be!!
  • Thank you all for the support! I went on Glyburide on Saturday after I called the OBGYN with really high numbers. It helps but I'm still slightly higher than where I should be. I see mfm on Friday for my 1st appt with them. I'm having major trouble with just the diet, I'm eating per the allowed carbs and am finding I usually eat a lot less carbs. I was told I'll end up on regular insulin most likely. I love you all!
  • I walked into the OB's office on a Tuesday and was seen by the endocrinologist on Wednesday. Put on insulin the same day and taken off the Metformin. I'm getting used to the needle pricks and insulin pen four times a day. I was high risk just based on my age (40) and my previous GD with kid 2 and 3.
I won't lie, I love food. They trust me to adjust my own insulin because I'm a nurse.
I'm looking forward to my 12 week ultrasound on April 28.
  • I'm doing better, but last night I forgot to take my evening glyburide, trying not to beat myself up over it. Numbers were high after fasting and breakfast. I remembered my breakfast dose but feel so guilty.
  • I was just diagnosed at 31w. I panic every time i poke because I feel so stressed out that my body is not doing what it is supposed to. I am also a little concerned that they are just now figuring it out because I am 40 and I feel they should have tested early. My morning numbers are high (100 - 108) and then regulated the rest of the day. This is baby 4 for me and never had GD before and it is causing me a great deal of stress. I am thinking night exercise might help with morning numbers?
  • Night exercise may help as well as making sure you eat your bedtime snack. I've been doing this, for a month and ended up on insulin. It gets easier to test yourself, but don't beat yourself up over the GD, it's the placenta messing with your body and is totally ok. Sometimes the fasting numbers are the hardest to control.
  • With my first pregnancy the morning fast numbers were always the worst. I had breakfasts with less than 5 grams of carbs and still couldn't get good numbers. That's how I eventually got put on a little insulin. I was disappointed but really it was fine in the end. It is definitely not your fault, and don't get mad at your body. That's just the way it is working. It's unfair, but it's not the worst thing. You are doing awesome taking care of your baby already despite all the stress.
  • I ended up on insulin with my first about 2 weeks after I was diagnosed with GD. I reacted to needing insulin worse than with the GD diagnosis. But it got really easy. I honestly thought the insulin injection was easier than the finger prick. If you get to that point, just know that it gets easier and it's only for a short period of time.

Im pregnant with my Fiesta baby and I was diagnosed last November. I have been worried about the babies weight but today I was "cleared". At 39 weeks the baby was estimated to be 3,7-3,8 kg and I was so relieved. No need To reduce labor or make c-section. All I have To do is wait.... Like normal people :D
  • I had GD with my first, then 4 years later DM, pregnant again and already on insulin. Once you get used to what is carbs, and that 15-20g counts as one choice, it's not too bad. Having protein with the carbs helps stabilize. Drink tons of water and go on walks.
