nub theory for gender

So at my 12 week scan I seen two horizontal lines and I'm almost positive it's a girl. I read about the nub theory and I'm wondering if anyone here thinks it's accurate? I asked the tech about it and she laughed saying 12 weeks the parts aren't there yet so there's no way to tell. I disagree. I have 2 girls 1 boy and know what I seen.Anyone else ?

Re: nub theory for gender

  • I couldn't tell myself but our tech said she was pretty confident we're having a girl and I was 12 weeks 1 day. She said baby was spread eagle the whole scan. Of course I'm not running out buying crib sheets just yet...we'll wait for the 20 week scan for that just to double check.

  • I've read somewhere that the direction of the "nub" (which is what later develops into a penis or clitoris) tells you if its a boy or girl, like it ifs pointing upwards toward the head its a boy, downward a girl. Likewise, seeing two or three parallel lines equals girl.

My next scan is on Friday, and I'll be curious if we'll see anything, but I agree about waiting till the 20 week scan before I invest in crib sheets!

  • At 11 weeks your child's genitalia, whether boy or girl, looks almost exactly the same, and at 12 weeks, there's still not a huge amount of differentiation. There is an image I've seen to compare them side by side, but I haven't been able to track it down -- will post if I find it.

Nub theory is to do with the direction of the nub, as PP said. Some studies say that beginning after 12 weeks, the success rate is 99% accurate, but that is with a sonographer trained specifically in fetal sex identification. However, nub theory studies are highly questioned and not broadly considered to be all that accurate (likely because many US techs are not trained to identify sex prior to 18-20 weeks).

FWIW, the US tech at my 12w ultrasound last time said it was a girl. I now have a beautiful, healthy son.
