Abnormal Pap

Hi my names rose, I'm about 28 weeks pregnant and i just got word from the doctor today that I had an abnormal Pap smear. They said they found HPV cells in my cervix, I have to go in for them to check it out more. I talked to a friend and she said she heard it was a common thing but I'm not quite sure what to make of the whole situation, my fiancée is freaking out. I don't know I guess I came here looking for something to boost me up. Maybe it is common, I know my mom said she had it and it disappeared after six months. Has anyone else experienced this??

Re: Abnormal Pap

  • Yes. My pap also came back abnormal due to this. I was shocked and freaked, but felt better after I talked to my husband (who didn't freak at all), and a longer talk with my doctor. Basically, she told me that during pregnancy your immune system is suppressed so things like this tend to surface. She said we'll do another pap after I have the baby, and that this often goes away after pregnancy. It's a virus, so chances are we've been carriers for a while but our immune system was able to fight it until now.

I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry. It doesn't affect the pregnancy and even google eased my mind (which never happens)!

  • Thank you so much, it does make me feel a lot better! I just want everything to be fine so I can ease my fiancées mind. He's the one that is really freaking me out haha he's so scared a do don't know what to do.
  • I had HPV for a few years before I got pregnant. I had to get 2 colposcopies done which sucked and all the said is that they will just keep monitoring it since there's nothing they can do but wait for it to go away on its own. It's so common now. I wouldn't worry about it al all. I don't have it now so I'm not sure what the process is with pregnancy but I'm sure it'll be fine

I had a borderline severely abnormal pap while pregnant with my son. My doctor wanted to do a colposcopy to get a better look. I wasn't about to let him take biopsies which can be part of a colposcopy. I chose to just wait until after the baby was born. I had a follow up pap at my 6 week PP checkup. It was abnormal again. I ended up having a colposcopy. They're just monitoring me to make sure the abnormal cells (which are from HPV) don't develop into cancer.

ETA: I'm not nervous about it. I went through this year's ago and the abnormal cells cleared up on their own. Like a pp said, it's common for this to happen during pregnancy.

I've had countless colposcopies, laparoscopies, and a LEEP procedure (removal of portion of cervical tissue) due to HPV/severe dysplasia of the cervix prior to my first pregnancy (7 years ago). While pregnant with DD1, I had another abnormal pap that was rechecked after birth and was then normal. Thankfully, I haven't had any abnormal paps since and I'm 27 weeks with baby # 3. Good luck!!
  • Thank you guys so much this really eases my mind!
  • This hasn't happened to me personally but it has happened to about 10 of my friends, it's pretty common from my understanding.
  • Mine came back as abnormal also showing signs of possible HPV cells. I had my pap on my first OB visit and they set up an apt to have a closer look...I had that apt 2 wks ago whe. I was 27wks...since my pap I had quit smoking and when my OB did the exam (all she did was check my cervix with a scope and do a swab with vinegar) she said everything looked normal and there was nothing to worry about and that smoking can actually cause a pregnant woman's pap to come back like mine did bc it actually causes some infection down there...she Said 90% of the time if the woman stops smoking then it will clear up on it's own...and it did (: we will still be doing another pap and possibly a cervical biopsy postpartum just to make sure, but she's confident all is ok (:
  • I had an abnormal pap about 7 years ago. Had a follow up colposcopy and it came back positive for hpv. I go every year for a pap and they have been normal ever since. There are many strains of hpv, and to my knowledge only a couple are precursors for cervical cancer. Just something to watch for, but not necessarily paranoid about. Because it is a virus, it will always be in your system, but not always active.
  • Mines abnormal too just not the HPV cells. Just weird cells that they have to keep an eye on in case they turn cancerous. Scarey. I freaked and started crying. But it's very common. With or without HPV. Still common.
  • Did any of your doctors suggest having a csection to prevent the baby from possibly getting the HPV if delivered vaginally?

If you are experiencing symptoms and have a breakout, then a c-section would be a probability. If you just have the virus in your system, you can deliver vaginally without a risk to the baby (as far as I know...I'm not a doctor, but this has been my understanding).
  • I had my first abnormal pap last year before i was pregnant, i had 2 colposcopies then both normal and should go away on its own, i fell pregnant in feb did a pap at my first appointment came back positive again for hpv, dr last wk did another colpo said this would not harm me or baby and is totally fine to do. Still waiting on those results, either way they cant do anything until after the baby is born, and even in that case i could scrap the bad cells off my self if i do a vaginal birth which she has seen happen. This is an easily fixed problem, and is so common. You just have to keep up with your appointments.
