admitted for preterm labor

I recently spent the past few days in the hospital for preterm labor. I'm only 28 weeks with my first and went to the hospital for bleeding. Upon arrival they discovered that I had already dilated to 1 and my cervix was soft. After 6 hours in triage we had an ultrasound that showed that my cervix had shortened and I was having contractions, I did not know that what I had been experiencing was contractions. Has anyone had any experience with this? Any suggestions?

  • I'm 26 weeks and was just in the hospital for something similar. My cervix has softened and I had some light contractions. Mine was due to infection though. My Dr pretty much told me that it's up to my body at this point. Either the infection has cleared and the signs of preterm labor will stay gone or it will continue to be a battle. I've tried to stay positive and take it easy. My advice is listen to your body and if something feels off go on to L&D. Once things get going it's harder to reverse. It's terrifying I know but I hope everything works out for you!! Think growing thoughts!!!

Good or bad (hopefully all good) keep us updated. Some of us are in the same boat and we can all benifit from advice and experience. I know I've been all panic these past few days.
  • Stay safe! Sending lots of good thoughts!
  • @candy=ram I went through something similar at 23 weeks. I saw spotting and went to L&D to discover that I had an IC. I didn't realize I was having contractions either and my cervix was dilating and shortening. I got an emergent cerclage to close up my cervix. When I went in I was dilated 1-2cm. The next day when my MFM did the procedure, I was dilated up to 4cm and he told me he saw the baby's foot! Afterwards, he said I may only have a few days to a couple weeks.  So far I've made it passed 28 weeks! I'm on modified bed rest and I take weekly progesterone shots to stop contractions. At 36 weeks (if I make it that far) they'll remove the cerclage and I can stop the progesterone.

Let's hope baby stays in for a little while longer. Sending good thoughts your way! Keep us posted!
  • My doctor told me that I have a short cervix at 18 weeks. It measured half the length it's supposed to be. She put me on progesterone pills (I have to vaginally insert them every evening) and said I was to be on light duty. I can still do things but just move at a but of a slower pace. I can't exercise though...not even prenatal.yoga. So far, it seems the pills are working because my cervix has stayed consistent and has not shortened anymore.

Best of luck to you. I hope they can get you to stop dilating so your baby can develop in utero some more.
  • I went through this with my third child. After a day of freaking out.. They gave me medicine to help stop it. Once it stopped.. I went on to be induced at 41wks BC he just didn't want to come in his own and got huge. Lol
  • sending good vibes your way...feeling jittery with the sad news...best luck for a good outcome!
