do they tell you the results at the ultrasound?

So my doctor ordered an urgent/emergency ultrasound tomorrow at the hospital to check to see whether I have excess amniotic fluid or just a big baby since I'm measuring weeks ahead. I just want to know if they'll tell me the diagnosis at the ultrasound or if I have to wait to see my doctor to find out the results. I don't see my doctor until next Monday, so I'm really hoping they'll tell me then if it's a big baby or extra fluid so I can prepare mentally to talk options with my doctor on Monday.

Re: do they tell you the results at the ultrasound?

  • Typically the tech will not tell you anything. You usually have to wait for the doctor.

  • Are you seeing an MFM? I had to see a specialist for another reason and the tech did an ultrasound and then the specialist came into speak to me and do another quick scan. If that's not the case, I would call your Dr in the afternoon of the next day to see if they have results.

I was afraid of that, it just sucks because I know they'll know the results. So it's a pain to have to wait to find out. However, I do understand why they'd want to wait, they don't want to be the ones to give you bad news, if there is bad news.

What is an MFM? I probably am not since I don't know what it is. Yeah, my doctor's office has 1 phone line for 8 doctors, and they don't have an answering machine, so it's pretty much impossible to get them on the phone. I will probably see my doctor before I could ever get her on the phone. So if they don't tell me I'll just have to wait.
  • MFM is Maternal Fetal Medicine or a perioneonatalogist.

No, from what I understand the doctor just wants it done so she knows what the diagnosis is and how to proceed treating my pregnancy, so from what I understand it's just a regular technician checking fluid levels and the baby's size.
  • I am having an ultrasound on Friday to look at the babies size. He's measuring at the 60th percentile so they're are checking his size again. I believe in seeing the doc right after. It sounds like worst case scenario I'd have to diet. Which might be motivation for me to get back to the gym!
  • If it was something the doctor was really worried about then you would have already received a call or told to go to the hospital.
  • Don't think the news is bad until you know. No need for that. An ultrasound tech will not be able to tell you results...I'm sure they know...they know what they're looking at. They may have the radiologist come in to look as well. The radiologist may be able to tell you something, but most likely they'll send the results to your doctor. If you're that concerned call your doctor later that day or the next day.

Is that the only thing going on, that your baby is measuring at the 60th percentile? That is completely within the average range, like solidly in the middle. I hope there's something else going on to justify your time and the expense! (Actually, no I don't, because it wouldn't be anything good, but without another reason that seems crazy!)
  • I had one of these last week bc I was measuring 3.5 weeks ahead...baby wound up measuring right on time and actually quite small (27th percentile) which makes sense as dh and I are both small. But she's breech and all balled up in there, which is why I measured big.

I saw my doctor immediately afterwards but the techs at my doctor's office are great at telling you what they're seeing while it's happening. Granted this was all good news and I don't know if that would have been the case if something was wrong. But that's one of the things I really love about my doctor's office. You always see the doctor immediately afterwards and the tech are quite informative. She even indulged my request to "make sure it's still a girl" when she was done measuring. :-)
  • They probably won't tell you but I just watch what the measurements are.. At my ultrasounds they do the measurements and it says what percentile or how many weeks the baby should be with that measurement. So in your case I would see if it looks like the measurements mean the babies big or not.. But if they don't do measurements of the baby just of the fluid that may not work.

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • From what I understand it might vary - some technicians give you some information / an indication but usually show the results to a doctor to clarify - eg, I'm doing GP share care but get my ultrasounds done at the hospital, usually the ultrasound technician gives us some info on the spot but also consults with / shows the results to doctor on site at the hospital to clarify, and then that doctor would either call us and/or pass the info straight on to our main providers, which is my local GP and the hospital staff at the birth centre. Maybe you can call the place where you're ultrasound to check what the process would be so you could work out how soon you can get access to the results, explain your situation and anxiety to know sooner rather than later and schedule an appointment accordingly. All the best xo
