2nd Trimester

Carb loading for 3 hr glucose test

I failed my one hr test this morning. I'm not surprised bc I failed with my son too. But now in preparation for the 3 hr they are telling me to "carb load." Did you have to do this? I didn't last time and I wonder what effect it has on the test.

  • That doesn't answer my question. I'm looking for other people who were instructed to do this.

Do you trust random people over your doctor?

I've never been instructed to do this personally but I'm also not a doctor. I've had to fast and I've also been able to eat beforehand, it depends on the doctor. Did you ask them about it?
  • I was instructed to do this (I normally don't eat a lot of carbs, and there fore when I took the test my body over conpensated). That's the purpose why (or at least I was told)

  • Same here.  I had to eat 150 grams of carbs for 3 days before the 3-hour test.  I was told it helped to ensure that my diet immediately before the test wasn't creating false results (positive or negative).  I suppose if you're having almost no carbs for the week before the test or a ton of sugar, bread, etc., it could give you an inaccurate result?

It does. Other people follow the directions provided by the lab taking their blood work.

Whether or not we carb load is irrelevant because that is the instructions you were given.

The same is true for fasting. I was told to fast for all my blood work (two one hours & 2 three hour glucose challenges). Some are told to eat high protein the morning of their draw. So, if others are instructed to eat that means nothing for me-- I was told to fast. See?

That is why I respectfully disagree & tell you that my response is actually right on the money.

If you want to know why you are being told to carb load then call your provider and ask. Being curious is not a crime & they should be able to tell you. My guess is to really challenge your body to process the sugar load & see. However, your provider should be able to answer any & all questions you have.

I'm not being difficult when I say please follow the instructions you were provided.
