How to prepare for getting induced.

I never really thought I would have to get induced. I've had a easy pregnancy so far only minor upsets. I have gestational diabetes and I'm on 10mg of med to control it. I've changed my diet and try to get enough physical activity. But my numbers are so up and down mostly up. My doctor said it would be best to induce me Monday. 39 weeks and 3days. I'm so scared I don't want to think about it. I go in for monitoring Sunday Night at 7 and they start induction at Midnight. He told me I need to eat and shower before I arrive at the hospital.
What food would be best to eat, before?
What should I expect?
About how long after they induce did you have your baby? (He said it could take 24hours)
Anything else I should know?
What to pack? Any info would be greatly appreciated

Re: How to prepare for getting induced.

  • I was induced bc baby wasn't very active didn't pass BPP like they hoped. Started pitocin at 10pm wednesday. I was 3cm 50% effaced to start with at 39 weeks and 3 days. At 9 am Thursday they broke my water that's when I could really start to feel contractions, 11am epidural. Was finally at 10 cm at 10pm after 3 hours of hard pushing, epidural wore off baby born Friday at 1246am. I know some inductions don't take quite as long. I didn't pack anything special for induction you will want to be in hospital gown then. I would eat whatever you want prior I was only allowed clear liquids after started on pitocin. One thing with induction at least where I delivered baby is on monitor the entire time so I was confined to room, after epidural no getting out of bed, which means straight cath every 2 hours which was not fun.

  • Thank you so much for letting me know how your induction went. I keep trying to tell my husband and family that just because they are inducing my Monday she may not be here till Tuesday. My sister and mom is even wanting to come up Sunday and that's just for observation, lol
  • When I was induced with both my older kids. I went into labour 30 mins later and had them 4 hrs later.
  • Getting ready to be induced at 6am!! So excited/nervous wish me luck 41+6 days
  • I was induced at barely 38 weeks with my first b/c of complications and my doc used something called a Foley Bulb, it's kind of "old school" but it's non-medicated which I liked. It goes in at night and they took it out in the morning-it got me to 4cm and 80% effaced. I don't know if this is an option for you at this point, but it could be worth asking about. I would eat protein and carbs before you go in - anything that will "last" you awhile. I also liked pretzels/crackers while being observed because I knew they wouldn't make me queasy later. Good luck! I was so afraid to be induced but had a GREAT labor and delivery! You're almost there!
