Is my baby sleeping to much?

my little boy is 12 weeks old and I'm a little worried he is sleeping to much, he sleeps 9-6 through the night with no feeds and has 3 2hr naps during the day. He is thriving during his awake time and is meeting his milestones. Is 16hrs off sleep to much?

Re: Is my baby sleeping to much?

  • I'd say he's fine! My LO sleeps lots at near 12 weeks.

  • Lucky mom.. Small babies may sleep between 16-20 hours in a day. It's good and specially when she is growing well. I used to put my lo in a baby deedee sleeping bag and she is off for straight 7-8 hours. Such a blessing!!
  • A lot of brain growing happens when they sleep. Sleep is good for everyone!

  • During a couple of my little ones growth spurts she slept 20 hours a day. But she has slept 12 hours a night since 10 weeks. So add in a couple naps and she hits 16 hours easy. I wouldn't worry, as long as they are getting enough food when awake, sleeping is good for growing!
  • The 2-month fact sheet I have hanging on our fridge from our pedi says that between 2-4 months old the average baby sleeps 14-16 hours per day. So I would say you're in target, assuming some need a little more, some need a little less. My LO often gets between 15-16 between his 11 hour nights and naps. I sometimes worry it's too much but remind myself of the brain development and restoration that happens during his sleep!
