Dirty Diaper Frequency *Update*

edited March 2015 in February 2015 Moms
Just checking for other experiences. LO is 7 weeks old and only has a dirty Diaper once every two to three days - at which point the amount of baby poo is insane. Previously she was having one or two small dirty diapers a day and a blowout every couple of days. I've heard the infrequent #2 can be normal for an infant and she's not showing any signs of constipation (no fussiness, no hard tummy). She's passed a lot of gas the last two days and we keep waiting for the pending blowout, but Daddy is very worried and wondering if we need an extra appointment. DD is breastfeeding exclusively in the event that makes a difference. Anyone else have experience this way? My first two babies were completely different and it's been long enough I feel like I'm relearning everything.

  • My son sometimes will go a day or two without a dirty diaper. Other times he has 3 a day lol. My pedi said to call them if he ever goes 3 whole days without a dirty diaper.

  • My son poops constantly. Typically during/after every feeding. He's EBF and 4 weeks old. This has been his pattern pretty much since we brought him home.

That said, I know there is a point where the stools slow down and it's not uncommon to skip a day. Since your LO is older than mine you might have hit that point already. Im not sure exactly when it is, but I'm sure Google or a call to the ped could tell you.

My 6 week old is exclusively breastfed and has gone three days without a poo- he passes gas here and there but no longer poops everyday- the ped says it's normal!
  • My 3 week old will go a day or 2 without a poop. I can tell it's getting close to time for a blowout because he gets squirmy and gassy. He is formula fed so it may make a difference. Some days he poops every couple hours. My pediatrician also said call if it's been 72 hours without poop.
  • I went in to the ER for this at 2 weeks. This is normal especially for BF babies because their body is taking in all of the nutrients from the milk and sometimes there is nothing left to make a bowel movement. Before I left they gave me children's suppositories and told me if she goes more than 4 days to insert a little piece. The few times that it does get to 3 or 4 days though she'll go by herself. They're just learning how to use those muscles down there. Pooping is one of those things they have to get the hang of.
  • Thanks. Oddly, my husband was more worried than I was. She pooped last night, so he feels better now. My middle child is 5 already, so some of this feels like I'm starting over with my first, especially since DD 3 is so very different from her big sisters.
  • I noticed that when she finally went it was creamy and green instead of seedy yellow. Dr. Google provided the answer - oversupply. One day of block feeding and ensuing discomfort later and I have a content little lady with regular bm again. Thanks for the weighing in and reassurance. I appreciate it.

The pediatric said at least once in 5 days for a bowel movement is normal, urinating is most important for breastfed babies. Mine goes once a day and its ALOT.
