lactation teas and other supplements

So I really want to breastfeed my little man. But my mom never developed milk with me so I am terrified I won't have the chance. Has anyone every used the lactation teas or other lactation supplements? Do they work? I am 26w5d now and if I want to use them I heard I need to start around now to get maximum results from he products.

Re: lactation teas and other supplements

  • If you're nervous, I would contact a lactation consultant but to be honest, I think you're jumping the gun on this one and I definitely would not take anything before talking to your doctor. For example, Fenugreek is widely reputed to stimulate milk flow but should not be taken while pregnant as it can also bring about uterine contractions.

  • Note: If you're interested in breastfeeding, I've found the book "Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers" to be really interesting and it's gotten the thumbs up from my breastfeeding friends for being really helpful.
  • Lactation teas and supplements worked great for me when I started breastfeeding. Starting now may be a bit risky. If you want a jump start in milk production pumping might do the trick but not until your about 35 weeks or so as that can trigger contractions. Like what the PP said, you should probably talk to a lactation consultant. A breastfeeding class might help too.

Here's a link that's really informative when it comes to breastfeeding.

They cover a wide range of topics and is really useful!

Some books that I liked are "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" and "The Breastfeeding Mother's Guide to Making More Milk".

Good luck to you! I hope everything works out!
  • Don't start yet.. But I love the tea. You smell like maple syrup the whole time though... Lol
  • I'm reading the book "Naturally Healthy Babies and Children" and in it there is a recipe for herbal nourishment tea meant for pregnancy- specifically it says "This tea may be used freely throughout the pregnancy and into the postpartum to promote milk production". There is also a recipe for an end of pregnancy formula to promote uterine strength and a Mother's Milk recipe for the days following birth.
  • Fenugreek is a supplement our lactation consultant suggests to new moms to help with milk production. I wouldn't cross that bridge until you get to it though. Good luck.
  • Thanks everyone. I worry about it a lot. I want what's best for Lil man and breast is best as we all know.
