Superficial Questions....

This is SO minor in the grand scheme of it all but anyone else going crazy not getting their hair done this first trimester?! I'm a natural brunette but have been blonde for the last ten years. It feel so yucky without my highlights! Anyone trying natural dyes or just sticking to the normal routine? Organic self-tanners?

  • Im in the same boat! I'm now "ombré" LOL! Apparently that's a thing!
  • I had mine done once in the first tri and over the weekend. I had mine done in the first tri with my first as well.

Wanted to add- the only valid concern is if you end up breathing in too many of the harsh chemicals but as long as you're not in a tiny cramped bathroom with no exhaust fan you should be fine as far as fumes go.

  • I agree with PP!  My OB was fine with me having my hair dyed as long as it was in a well ventilated area.  Since I have it done at the salon, I felt pretty safe.  Of course, if your OB is of a different opinion, I can't blame you for taking his or her advice.

  • You should be fine in a well-ventilated area. If you're a do-it-yourselfer (like me), stick to ammonia free or henna dye to be on the safe side. :)
  • @lauramichelle58 LOVE the "on the patio"! :))

Where in Florida? I live in Fort Lauderdale!!
  • @lauramichelle58 Awesome. I've used a garden hose and a backyard on more than one occasion. Looked like an auburn swamp by the time I was done!
  • My mom is a hair stylist, she said it is ridiculous that people are so afraid of getting their hair dyed during pregnancy. The chemicals are pretty beign and you would have to ingest them to have a real issue. She had three healthy, full term pregnancies in the late 80s, even breastfed with those chemicals on her or around on a daily basis. Girls, get your hair did!
  • I'm getting my hair done Thursday and CANNOT wait! I've been dyyyyyying! I was considering spray tanning too, but I need to read up on that a little more.

  • @barrelocarol I'm a curly haired girl too and had no idea there was a rule against straightening?!
  • Oh! I realized I didn't clarify!

I do the Japanese chemical straightener. It's much less chemical-y than other straighteners, can be applied with bare gloves and doesn't wash out (EVER!!!!) but my gyno isn't 100% sold.

She said she would prefer if I waited until later (a vague time in the third trimester), but I think if I reeeeally wanted to, I could have negotiated an earlier timeframe :))

Side note: the Japanese leaves my hair looking so freaking sexy, volumous, Vidal Sassoonish. In case anyone is debating the high price tag...
  • I wanted to get my hair highlighted but my hubby was against it. He said my hair looked fine the way it is and that we shouldn't expose the baby to any unnecessary chemicals. I'm more lax about stuff but I respect that it's his baby too so I just got a cut.
  • My doctor asked me to wait just because I had miscarried before. It drove me insane because I am naturally light brown but dye my hair black..... My husband was super sweet telling me he couldn't tell but I knew he could. I just got my hair done last week and I feel like a million bucks again
  • Not related to hair dying, but shaving/waxing and getting a pedicure. I know when my belly gets bigger I won't be able to do these things myself! What did you STMs do? Is it safe to go to a salon and get a pedicure? Is it safe to have your legs and vag waxed?

I do all of the above and have no plans to stop. I have not read anything against any of these things and did them all with my first. If I can't wear my cute little dresses I can at least be well groomed.
  • @Shundiec I've heard waxing is more painful when your pregnant something about the extra blood flow. Have noticed any difference?
  • @bans02 Sadly it is more painful. I used to take Ibuprofen before and after so now that I can't I am more sensitive. My tech is very good though she tries her best to get done in 10 minutes. She actually said she does more pregnant women than non-pregnant.
