Anyone else scared to buy things for baby?

This might sound crazy, but is anyone else still too nervous to buy things for baby? I'm due Sept 23. We just hit 12 weeks a couple days ago. Logically I know the risk of miscarriage is less than it was even a couple days ago, but I still can't bring myself to go buy anything. I have a 20% off coupon for Buy Buy Baby that expires Monday. I want to go use it but I'm hesitant. It's sort of like counting your chickens before they hatch. Anyone else feel this way? Or have any tips to help get over the worry?

Re: Anyone else scared to buy things for baby?

  • I was nervous because I had a miscarriage last year but at the store a few weeks ago I bought a cute little shirt and the next day my husband bought little socks to match. it's adorable and is a visible reminder everyday to see it hanging there. I say go for it, but don't go crazy. :)
  • I had a miscarriage right before I got pregnante with this one and it was hard but someone tolled me its better to enjoy every moment becuase ur nkt going to get it back this pregnancy isnt going to happen again so enjoy every thing and go buy just a little something for the baby stay positive :)

  • I think it's still a little early. You have a lot of time believe me :-) I'm sure another good sale will come up. I know it's hard to resist temptation lol buying baby stuff is so exciting! Of course I'm not telling you what to do, just my opinion, take care.
  • I'm 14 weeks and we're planning on checking out cribs and dressers today. I don't want to put it off too long and then feel rushed, and since I'm feeling good now and have energy, I'm taking advantage! Our shower will be at the end of June, so I've also already started (and almost finished) my registries online because I like to research everything and don't want to feel rushed. To each their own! Do what makes you feel comfortable :)
  • I feel the same way. I miscarried in September and I feel very hesitant to buy anything yet, although I hit 15 weeks today. I did get a diaper bag because it was free, my cousin hosted a 31 party and was able to get some free goodies. She extended an offer to me and it was too good a deal to pass up. I want to order the crib but I feel like I should at least wait until my next appt.
  • I know what you mean. My DH convinced me to get at least one item and it was fun. We kept the receipt just in case the worst happens.
  • I feel the same way. DH wants to go out and buy stuff but I keep saying "wait until the next appt".. I'm thinking I might start buying a couple things but will keep the receipts.
  • I never had a miscarriage before but I'm sure it's ok to buy baby items. I'm 13w6d today and since I found out in pregnant I by 1-2 items every months after the appointment. But I have the receipts saved in case the "Bad" happens.
  • this might be a little morbid, but I don't worry about buying things because I know that if (God forbid!!) I were to have another miscarriage, I would still keep trying, and anything I buy is just stocking up for when I'll eventually use it. I actually started buying stuff before I got pregnant the first time, if I saw something perfect for a great price. I guess if you're the kind of person that would feel upset and want to throw everything away then it might be good to be cautious, but to me a perfect outfit is still a perfect outfit. (but I also bought my wedding dress in my first engagement and wore it when I married someone else. hey it was still my perfect dress!! lol)
  • I'm with you. It still feels too early to buy much. I bought a box of diapers last week and it felt funny. I'm going to wait until this summer to get the furniture and get her room ready! (I don't have much to buy bc this is #2).
  • I have had 3 miscarriages consecutively, so buying one or two things could be ok, but just be prepared what happens "if". 2 of my 3 miscarriages were after 12 weeks. So I'm obviously much more conservative. Best wishes!
  • I bought a baby monitor the month my husband and I started trying. It was amazing deal on black Friday. well it took us a year and 3 months to get pregnant and I was convinced I had jinxed us lol now I'm pregnant I've only bought a little hat. Not nervous but I know I've got time
  • @jen83mn I feel the exact same way. I'm 14+2 and I decided to start buying little things here and there. Better to have everything ready before he gets here than to not be ready for him and have to rush last minute.
  • Im 14 weeks and have already gotten several big things for baby. I like to prepare! I think its fun to go ahead and atleast look at things. You never know what could happen but dont need to worry or dwell on it
  • I've been terrified to purchase anything. Currently 14 weeks and 2 days. I did finally go out and purchase a set of bibs. My neighbors bought me a stroller with matching car seat, my grandma bought a bunch of blankets and bibs also, and then my mom bought a bassinet. It's kind of overwhelming. I'm not ready for that, plus I'm very anal about things matching.. I have my theme already chosen and almost none of these things match.. Except for the bassinet and the bibs I bought. Hah. If you wanna get a couple small things, I see no harm. Just don't go crazy with it.
  • @GeorgiaDottie Thanks for the tip! I never knew that!
  • Since I had a previous miscarriage and struggled for over a year to conceive thereafter, I am very hesitant to get too attached to this pregnancy. I haven't even bought maternity clothes yet because I'm so scared this might end any day! But I do wish I could feel ok to buy something now because I think it helps get you excited for baby. Hopefully we will feel better about making purchases soon! I'm sure it will happen soon!

  • I hear you! I haven't bought much. I bought a set of swaddle blankets and some cloth diapers. I'm scared to jinx it. It all seems too good to be true!
  • We have the same due date! I am nervous about it too just because my mother had a friend when she was pregnant with me who lost her baby at 36 weeks. She didn't purchase a crib for me until a week before her due date just in case. So I have grown up with that story. I'm sure when I know the gender I will start buying though. Maybe we need more confirmation. Every time I go to an us I think God I hope it's still in there and the right size.
  • I suffered 2 miscarriages prior to this pregnancy and feel the same way about buying things- I'm yet to purchase anything... Not sure when I'll be ready
  • I am 12 weeks on Monday and made my first purchase today. I stood in the aisle for a long time before deciding to get it, but I'm glad I did! I'm not going to go nuts or anything, and likely wont buy anything else until we know the sex but I found a good deal! Lol. My MIL has been buying things here and there, so it feels less weird to have baby items around this early.
  • Just got back from Babies R Us and bought our crib, mattress, glider and ottoman, and pack n play (the one I wanted was on display for a great price so I figured why not). So all of the furniture is purchased for baby's room (we have a large nook that's changing table height that we'll be using as a changing table and plan to put storage on the floor in the closet so we don't need a dresser). Everything else will be on our registry, so I won't buy anything else until after our showers are done this summer and we see what is left. But I feel great knowing we've got the furniture taken care of! I wanted the nursery to be somewhat finished before my shower in June that my friend is throwing at my house just so everyone could see it, and since I know I'll be helping put the crib together with the husband, I would rather do it now before I have a huge belly to work around!

I'm in the same boat... I bought several things before I even knew I was pregnant because they were cute. I actually bought a diaper bag over a year ago at Nordstrom Rack because I loved it & it was 50% off LOL. I'm 15 weeks tomorrow and I know something could still go wrong, but honestly I've seen tragedies where something bad happens to a baby at 38 weeks along :-(. And we aren't all going to wait until the baby actually comes out to buy things. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable of course! I'm just trying to stay positive and pray for the best :-)
  • It's tricky isn't it? Last year I lost my first baby at 20 weeks and had to cancel my orders for the pram, bassinet etc. it was so hard and do horrible that this pregnancy we have decided to buy a car seat, a few basic onesies and some nappies fairly close to our due date. Anything beyond that my husband and friends will buy for us once I'm in hospital.
There's no way I could bring myself to even walk into a baby store right now, maybe at 30 weeks or so.

    Oh my gosh.....so horrible.  I can't imagine :(  Can I ask what happened @maanda
  • Aweee I'm due sept 22nd! I say go for
    It! !!!!!! :D
  • Totally understand.
I personally am not going to buy anything till I know the baby is here and all is healthy.
I will have a baby shower only after birth.

Nothing happened, her little heart stopped and that was it.
    I won't hijack the post now ;)

Do whatever feels right for you and celebrate baby in any way you like!
  • I am due September 23 too. I haven't bought anything, we haven't started to pick out names and we haven't told anyone (even parents). I have had 3 MC so we are just taking it one week at a time. We have our 12 wk US next week. Maybe after that I will feel better about things.
  • I'm 11w5d and we've been given loads of things already. Cot, pram, bouncy chair, clothes etc.
even if God forbid, the worst does happen we'll save the things we've got for the next time.

It makes it feel more real to have a few things, or so I've found.

    Congratulations! X
  • *hugs* @maanda, so sorry :(

lol nice. I bought my diaper bag before I got pregnant the *first* time. (before my miscarriage) I was at BRU shopping for a friend, and it was sooo cute I couldn't resist! (and on sale, haha) I still love it, oddly I find it comforting in dark moments to get it out and think about what to put in it. it's like a promise to myself, I guess, if that makes sense.
  • @maanda, really sorry.  that must have been so hard :(

That totally makes sense, I'm the same way

  • I'm waiting till I'm at least 6 months and the baby is viable.
  • @LifeofLauren2 I say buy things when you're comfortable! But as a side note we should all be happy to know that bed bath and beyond and buy buy baby coupons (same company) do not expire like they say and you can use one for each item you buy in the same transaction. I learned that a few weeks ago from an employee when I was there. Just thought I would share!
  • I've had 4 m/c and said no shopping until after 20 weeks, but we were in toys r us with the kids yesterday and they had a beautiful cot bed it was the last one and had been £249 but the manager said we could have it for £99 so we bought it.
  • I'm due in September and 15 weeks along and I have bought a few things for the baby's room. No clothes or anything yet but a few cute paintings and I couldn't resist buying the cutest owl stuffed animal for the crib. It's just exciting!
  • We are waiting to make any big purchases until we get past the 6 month mark because a lot of stores have a 90 day return policy. I know it sounds morbid to say that, but I've had 3 mc's so I want to make sure that we can return stuff just in case. Also, we aren't getting anything at Babies r us because they only give out store credits. I read something about a mom who had a stillborn baby and when she tried to return stuff, they wouldn't refund her.
