Who administers their own progesterone injections?

At the appointment for my first injection the nurse demonstrated to my husband how to do the injections. Wednesday was our first time to do it at home. It hurt way less when he did it but looking at the injection site I now wonder if he did it too low. Now it's sore, there's a knot, and it itches. I'm not concerned since I think this is how it felt afterwards during my last pregnancy. He's going to be gone next Wednesday and I'm contemplating if I want to attempt doing it myself! Any words of wisdom?

  • Do you give them intramuscularly? Or subcutaneously?

  • Intramuscular, but since he went a little lower with the injection I wonder if it ended up intramuscular or intrafat, lol!

  • Did the nurse draw a bullseye with permanent marker? You want to make sure to get it in the upper/outter quadrant of you butt. In regards to doing it yourself, my Dr's office forbid it. If my DH or Mom was not available I had to go into the office and one of the nurses gave it to me. I have heard of others doing it themselves, but it seems difficult IMO. GL

You will know it if you go in too high or low cause it will hurt. I had to do some on my own, my RN just had me do them in my thighs. It was really easy and my butt was happy for the break.

I never administered my own but I did two round of IVF and a collective 15 weeks of the injections. I contacted the ENT at my local fire station and paid him or baked for the fire department and they would do it when my husband was traveling. As for the itching etc. you are probably allergic to the oil. Let doctor know and they will change the type of oil. No big deal.

My husband did mine for about 10 weeks. Here are the tips:

Warm oil in armpit before you draw up. Totally helps with knots and itching.

My upper outer butt was pretty much painless. Draw an imaginary line with your eyes from the top of your butt crack to almost your side. That's where it goes in. You can go up to a half inch lower or inside.

Alternate sides each night. Don't put needle where you feel a knot (ouch).

Straight needle like a dart, inserted quickly. Hurts way less this way. My husband held it like a dart.

Rub right after, like a deep massage, and right to heating pad for about 5 minutes.

  • I think once you do it yourself the first time, you will be fine. Some people have a problem injection themselves but should eventually get over it. I'm an RN and I did my own but I know other woman who are not nurses and felt comfortable enough injecting themselves.
