Pumping and breastfeeding- how can Dad help?

LO is just about 1 month now and we've established that he can successfully take a bottle without impacting his breastfeeding. How can we work my husband into feeding without my boobs becoming sore, engorged, and leaky? Last night we experimented with him giving an evening bottle and a MOTN bottle and I was up along side him pumping anyway. And I pumped a ton! (Like 8 oz from
Both boobs) I am definitely grappling with an oversupply to begin with and LO is still eating on demand frequently- like every 2 hours. Is this something that will iron itself out? Or are moms with an oversupply just shit out of luck in this area? I guess I am just hoping to hear some success stories of routines you've established with your SO pitching in with feedings...

Re: Pumping and breastfeeding- how can Dad help?

  • I'm interested in seeing the responses to this as well. Pumping in the evening while DH gives LO a bottle isn't an issue - but like you said: in the middle of the night I'd much rather sleep than get up and pump but my boobs get so full they eventually wake me up from pain and I have to pump. Sorry I can't help but I'm looking forward to what others have to say.

  • Follow. I have the exact same question/issue! Hopefully, we get a good response!
  • I just pump for a quick 10 minutes to "take the edge off" and then go back to sleep while my LO is getting bottle fed with the previous nights pumping. It's better than being up for an hour feeding, burping, and changing.
