Most traditional way of spelling Caitlyn?

DH and I have finally decided on the name Caitlyn for our baby, calling her Katie. But I'm up in the air about the spelling of Caitlyn. My best friend spells it the way I am spelling it above but I would prefer the most traditional way of spelling it, preferably with a "K".

How do you spell Caitlyn?

Re: Most traditional way of spelling Caitlyn?

  • I think...and this is only based on what I read on the internet...that Kaitlyn is the most traditional spelling. I've known girls named Kaitlyn spelled every way imaginable though but I think that way is one of the most widely known and accepted ways.

  • Traditional spelling is Caitlin.

Funny and true story here... My name was originally spelled "Caitlin" on my birth certificate but when my mom came home from the hospital some wrote a big banner saying "WELCOME CAITLYN" and my parents fell in love with the more Irish spelling and had it changed officially. So i have two birth certificates, the cooler one definitely being Caitlyn :)

I go by Caity for short and have never found my name properly spelled in any souvenir shop but I love being a little more unique than other Katies and have come to embrace the fact that noone ever spells it right on the first try (or second or third lol)
  • I believe Caitlin is the traditional spelling.  All others are variations.

Caitlin is the true gaelic spelling. Everything else has been made up!

  • Thank you!! I will suggest Caitlin as I always prefer original spellings

  • I know a Katelyn and then Kate or Katie is truly short for that spelling... I don't know if it's the traditional way but its an option!

Trying not to be defensive but I think there's a difference between variations and being "made up". Just because things are translated differently in various languages doesn't necessarily mean it's made up.

You're right.. But as far as I know, the name Caitlin has never been "translated" into other languages, people have just twisted the spelling. All spelling variations are modern.

Not that there is anything awful about spelling your name Caitlyn or Kaitlin or whatever, but for people who want a true original spelling, Caitlin is the only way.
  • I've seen it spelled twelve ways to Sunday but I prefer Caitlin.
  • Caitlin which is the Irish way to spell it. It is the original spelling.

Last year I had 6 students named Caitlin and they all spelled it differently... :|
  • I'm from Ireland. It's spelled Caitlin here. Beautiful name
  • My name is spelled Caitlyn. Supposedly the top two spellings are Kaitlyn and Caitlin. If Starbucks is any indicator, no one will ever spell it right anyway. I go by Caite (pronounced Kate) which is always spelled wrong. If you are planning on calling her Katie, I would stick with a K spelling. I love my name, but would love if people knew how to spell it. All of my kids have names that basically only have one way to spell because of this.
  • My name is Katelyn. Which to me has always made sense because of the way it's pronounced Kate-lyn

This was always my very favorite girl name, but my husband vetoed, and then I found that I prefer names that have a fairly obvious spelling anyway.

I do think a K spelling would be nice with a Katie nickname, and always liked the Kaitlin spelling. I'm generally not a fan a fan of y in most names.

You also could do Kate with Lynn has a middle name? Tough one. Far too many options.

Except Caitlin is Irish, and there is no K in the Irish alphabet. Hence Caitlin is the most traditional spelling of Caitlin.

I always thought Caitlin was the traditional spelling and everything else was a variation. However, it's been around so long that the other spellings don't look "wrong." I would still go with Caitlin though.

  • Caitlin is the original and has the most pleasing look to me, as the spelling exemplifies that it is its own, autonomous name as opposed to being a mash-up of Kate and Lynn. Also, there is nothing wrong with using the nickname Katie and spelling it this way. Many nicknames are spelled with letters that are not in the original name (Margaret - Peggy; Edward - Ted/Teddy; Elizabeth - Betsy).
  • I don't see a problem with naming her Caitlin with the nn Katie. Caitie is not really an intuitive spelling for the nn Katie. (No shade to you ladies who use Caitie! I swear!) @LizWhiz87 is spot on in get reasoning about why the nn doesn't have to be matched exactly to the name. I'd use the original Irish spelling and the more easily accessible nn.

  • As several people have stated, Caitlin is the original spelling. Pretty name but insanely popular. My friend's daughter's name is Caitlin. She also has another Caitlin, a Katelyn, and a Kate in her preschool class of 6.
  • I think Kate with a K traditionally comes from Katherine? I've seen Katelyn before, but the traditional spelling is Caitlin.
  • I have a niece named Kaitlin. They call her Katie. I guess I am use to seeing it spelled that way
  • Caitlin is the original spelling. IMO it is the only spelling.
  • Caitlin.

Here's a good rule of thumb. If there is a y in the middle of the name, it's not the traditional spelling. There are probably exceptions to this. But it's a pretty solid assumption.
