Glider Chair Experiences

Hello!

I am first timer to be a mother! I am researching the options of nursery glider chairs or rocking chairs. I am not sure if ottoman should be worth to have it or not?

Please share your experiences whether the ottoman is necessary or not.

Also if you have recommendations for purchasing chairs please share too! I'm trying to purchase only in framed and customized the cushions with fabric through etsy.

Thank you!

Re: Glider Chair Experiences

  • It all depends I guess. I have the glider that looks like a rocking chair...if that makes sense lol..and I redid the fabric to match the nursery. I didn't have any problems with it and it was small enough to fit in the bedroom which is a little on the smaller side. We only used it for a good few months when we were sleep training and then it sat there. They are cheaper as well. The only complaint would be if I had the room I probably would of gone with the Ottoman glider just because the bigger my first got the harder it has to hold her without feeling like my arms were falling off lol and that's probably why we stopped using it so soon. And i say it depends because who knows, maybe your baby will only want you to stand and bounce them! Lol :) good luck.

  • I've had both. With my first two kids, we used a rocker/glider that also had a gliding ottoman. .It took up a lot of space in the room. This time around we sold the old rocker and splurged and bought a gliding recliner, still can put your feet up, but also still have space. I'm loving it already!

  • I would say totally necessary. I almost always sit in our glider with my feet on the ottoman and my knees bent up. But I am the sort of person who prefers to be curled up into a ball, so it is the most comfortable for me.

  • I had a rocking chair for my first daughter and I found it cumbersome. As she grew her head would hit the arms while I was breastfeeding, and it put a lot of strain on my back to have my feet on the ground. This time around we have a glider, it takes up more room however, it's much more comfortable and I have a feeling it will fit my second DD wonderfully. We picked it up for free off of a facebook tag sale swap page, worth checking out one if you're not sure you want to spend hundreds of dollars and commit one way or another.
  • Thank you for your tips and sharing experiences!!! :) I agreed about taking lots of space and the room is not really spacious. I think it's more sense to wait for the glider after the crib so I can see how much space it takes.

  • I love mine and still use it 18 months later. Our daughter is not a great sleeper (night terrors) and if I need to rub her back or get her to settle down in the middle of the night it's perfect. It's also the most comfortable at the end of my pregnancy because I don't need help to get off of it.

I should mention we have a glider with no ottoman we got second hand. I often wish we had some sort of a foot rest...
  • Glider and ottoman we lived in ours to the point where we wore it put with one kid and are buying another
  • I use my glider and ottoman every night when putting dd to sleep. My ottoman glides as well I don't think that part is necessary but I deft need something for my feet. DDs is best chairs (I think) and I just got one from PBK for this lo. If cost or space is a concern, you could do a poof, like below.

  • Thanks CateofChicago! This gave me a great idea for the feet rest!!!! I really like this idea.
    Thank you so much!!! :)
  • Adding on to the topic of gliders:
How long did it take for you to receive yours? Want to make sure I order one in time before LO is born June 18. Moving, so we don't have a place to really put it yet!
  • We were lucky enough to be given a used Dutailier reclining glider and ottoman by MIL's neighbor. It's in near perfect condition since I think the previous owner barely used it- there was even a tag still on the ottoman! After a little looking around I found it on buybuybaby for $700!!!!!!! Outrageous! But we lucked out I guess, I mean I have no problem accepting a $700 hand me down.
  • @Westypet I think DDs took 5 weeks. It's considered regular furniture so it takes just as long as the other stuff. PBK has a 3 week quick ship option, which is what I'm doing for this one. Last time, they wre back ordered on everything. I think BRU has a quick ship too.

  • I'm using a small tan microfiber recliner that we happened to have in the basement already. I like that the puffy armrests will be nice for breastfeeding and if I accidentally fall asleep I can recline back and hunker down. I didn't want to purchase an expensive one and felt guilty with one sitting on my registry..... I know I'm weird.
  • When we moved here in June our furniture was over 30 days delayed by the moving company. Government contracts at their finest, y'all. Anyway, so we went yard sailing (sale-ing? I like it better the other way) and found a small padded and upholstered rocker with a footrest for $60. It's seriously old skool, the old timer I bought it from told me stories of his dad sitting in it and listening to his baseball team on the radio before they had a TV. We've affectionately called it "Dad's chair" since we bought it, and now it will actually be Dad's (more Mom's than Dad's, but still) chair. I wish I could remember where that guy lived so I could tell him that his dad's chair will usher in a new generation of dad-ness. I think he would get a real kick out of that.

  • A nice oversized glider will be our one splurge for the baby...we specifically are purchasing one that can be used in a family room or den after the kids are older (and I'm sure it's beat to hell) just because spending $750 on a chair and ottoman makes me crazy if it's just specifically for a nursery like some of the Dutellier gliders look.

  • We got an oversized glider recliner combo from BuyBuyBaby. Was able to use a 20% off coupon to buy it as well which knocked off a really good chunk. I love it already and spend every Friday working from home in that chair. My husband loves it as well. It's a little big but we are both really tall so its been a lifesaver. I also expect to be taking more and more naps in this chair as it gets harder to sleep laying down.

  • I bought a gliding recliner that is super comfortable cost the same as a rocker or glider would be and I won't have problems getting up because of the Ottoman being in the way. Plus we are trying to keep baby in the nursery so if we had to its nice enough to sleep on. In addition we have insurance on it so if anything happens to it they will fix or replace it.
