Constipation - anyone else?

Is anyone struggling with on-and-off constipation with their LO? For the last several weeks, our LO has this problem — it comes and goes. Sometimes we have to press a warm cloth to his bottom to get a nice, soft poop flowing. We called the doctor and she says as long as he's pooping and wetting 6 - 8 diapers a day, then it might just be how he's wired. I'm not satisfied with her answer and plan to go into the doctor for a full exam on this. (Yes, we are considering changing doctors too).

I'm not BFing anymore (sadly) and the formula he's been on his helped produce really soft, breastmilk-like poops until the last few weeks.

But our doctor did make it seem like this is fairly common. Anyone else?

  • What formula are you using. I have the same issue

Constipation isn't really about frequency, as much as texture. Soft poops = good, hard pellet type poop = bad.

We were instructed that LO may go upwards of a week without pooping & thats OK. As long as it was a soft texture once it came, wet diaper count was good, and LO wasn't acting uncomfortable.
  • jpagano113 - we are using Similac Advance Organic. You?
  • My LO was pooping multiple times per day (pretty much after every feeding), and all of a sudden (around 8 weeks old) went three days without pooping! Called the dr, who said that babies' "schedules" can change, and, as mentioned above, many go only once per week! Our dr advised that as long as LO didn't seem uncomfortable and texture looked okay, it was not a concern. Now, LO usually poops once per day or once every other day. I have exclusively breastfed her, but I can imagine that a change to formula could precipitate a change in your LO's pooping routine.

Holle organic. I find organic formulas constipate. I add a scoop of enfamil in there to keep her regular. If not she has clay like poops :( now she goes once every two days but her poops are softer
  • If I ate the organic shit I would be constipated too

  • Nope... I have a unicorn baby who poops rainbows. :)

  • Uh oh. We do organic formula for our one bottle a day. I also eat onions a lot. Could his stinky poop be the formula or the onions?

Maybe I should start feeding him onions in addition to the breastmilk and formula for a control.

  • We had this issue on all the organic formulas. Switched to Gerber Good Start Soothe and the problem immediately got much better. The Gerber formulas all have special easy to digest proteins and the soothe has probiotics. We now have a much happier baby.

  • I give my baby a probiotic, it's called bio gaia and it seems to help keep him regular cause otherwise he was going 2 days and spent most of it trying to poop, he's much more settled now!
  • nurseangela25  - When did you start your baby on the probiotic? I think that's a good option for us and I'm planning to talk to our pediatrician on our next appointment.
  • My LO is 3 months and goes more than 7 days to poo. When he goes its soft and creamy. (Velveeta cheese sauce) he doesn't seem uncomfortable or any other symptoms. Dr wants to take x Ray but my DH objected. I am EBF. Trying the thermometer trick. Prune juice Apple juice. Changed my diet. No cows milk. Nothing. Would u get an x Ray?
  • @ekmah04 My DS1 would go 5 days between bm's. Also EBF. My doctor didn't even flinch about it, just said he must be growing a lot.
You might think about getting a second (Dr.) opinion.
Most of the time Doctors say it is the consistency not frequency.
  • Update - we started our LO on a probiotic per our doctor's recommendation and the texture of his poops (and frequency) have improved significantly!
  • Which probiotic are you using?
  • After doing some research, I was deciding between Gerber Soothe and Udo's Choice Infant's Blend Probiotic. We ended up going with Udo's Choice (made by Flora) because it had better overall reviews and many people specifically said it helped with constipation.
