Contractions or braxton hicks??

Hello Ladies,

I am a day shy of 30 weeks pregnant with mono di twins, this is my first pregnancy so everything is very new to me.  I hope you will be able to shed some light on what I experienced last night.

Well for most of the day yesterday my belly was rock hard and the girls were moving like crazy so I didn't think much of it.  Then when I was laying in bed last night I started to get this intense pain all over my belly and below, along with the belly pain I had bad lower back pain as well. The belly pain would come and go but the back pain was consistant. I finally found some releif after I took a warm shower.   I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow and I have left a message for the nurse. My doctors office can take all day to return a message though.   I was just wondering if this was normal and just my body getting ready for the girls arrival or do you think it is something more serious and warrants a trip to labor and delivery?  I hope you ladies can help.

Re: Contractions or braxton hicks??

  • With pains like that I would have called my doctor immediately.  Especially since you described the pain as intense.  Braxton Hicks, for the most part, are not painful.  I would call again and tell them its urgent for them to get back to you.  Good luck

  • I agree with PP. Definitely give your doctor a call and tell them its urgent. If they are intense or painful then they are most likely contractions. My doctor told me he would rather me come in 1000 times and have it be nothing than not come in the one time I should have =]

  • Same thing happened to me 3 weeks ago at 30 weeks and I took it as "no big deal" and just Braxton hicks. My water ended up breaking. I now have my beautiful mono/di girls, but they'll be in the nicu for a long time. Don't ignore the pain! Check it out! I keep blaming myself thinking that if I went in I would have had a different outcome and could have let my babies "cook" a little more :)
  • Here is what my doctors have told me- if it causes a change to your cervix, then it's contractions.  Basically the only way to really know is to get checked out by your doctor.  If you are having constant Braxton HIcks or contractions all day long that would definitely give you cause for concern to call your doctor or triage.  If you call after hours do you have a better chance of speaking to someone at triage?
