Gross TMI Healing Question

This is going to be a long, gross question.

Okay.. so, I had a bit of a traumatic vaginal delivery. My DD was over 9lbs and her arm and cord were both wrapped around her neck, so it was difficult for her to deliver easily - the doc had to pull pretty hard. Well, needless to say I tore. However, about 2 weeks ago I made the poor choice in looking at my wound. Yikers! It was not a pretty sight and I was certain I had torn out my stitches, so I made a trip to my OB. Long story short, she said I didn't have a normal tear ... that it was more of a "scrape" like when you fall on your knee or elbow and the skin is scraped off. She said it couldn't really be stitched together but rather had to heal from the inside out (regrow skin, basically). It looks more like a labial than a perineal tear. Flash forward to today: it still does not feel awesome and may or may not be bleeding (hard to tell where it's coming from at this point). My 6-week check up is in 2 weeks so my question is: would you call and have it checked out, or would you just wait the 2 weeks? It doesn't look awesome, but I also don't think it looks infected. It just looks like a train wreck, haha! I'm terrified it'll never heal normally and then sex will be awful.

Bonus question: my lochia had basically stopped and then started back up full-force, almost as heavy as it was in the hospital. I called them to ask if that was okay, and they said it was normal. Has anyone else experienced that? It freaked me out big time when I saw it start up again because there was just so much!

Re: Gross TMI Healing Question

  • I would go see the doc early just to be safe. I also had the same thing with the lochia happen to me!! It stopped completely then came back

  • I tore on both sides on my labia and was only stitched on one side. (why one side is beyond me) I also made the mistake of looking. 6 weeks pp now and it is starting to look normal. I was terrified it would never look the same again.

  • I had an extremely bad tear with my first. It still hurt at my 6 week check up. Doctor looked and saw a lot of scar tissue which was the cause of the discomfort. I also started bleeding again pretty bad around week 4 with my first. I was still bleeding at my 6 week check up. Doctor did an ultrasound to make sure there wasn't a small piece of the placenta left behind even though he said it was intact when it came out. There wasn't. He extended my pelvic rest and no exercising until 8 weeks postpartum. By then I felt no pain and the bleeding stopped. Some people just take longer than others. This time around I didn't have any stitches so it's a different story. I would call your doctor so they know but they might just tell you to wait until your check up. Mine told me to wait.
  • Thanks! I checked things out today and it looks like things are KIND of healing, so I think I may wait to call the doc. It's not super painful... just uncomfortable (feels like tugging). Thanks for the helpful replies :)
  • Yah just call the doctor and ask if you should come in early. It's so normal to be scared things won't come back together. Good news is our Drs do this a lot! But double check, just at least for peace of mind. :D
Ps-that was not anywhere as gross as it could be.
  • My midwife said locia flow will increase when the placental site heals (7-10 days pp) and when you are active. She said to expect days of no flow randomly mixed in with days of medium/light flow for up to 8 weeks.

  • I would just wait until the 6 week appointment. I have been bleeding a lot still and I am 10 days pp. I felt like it should have eased up by now but it hasn't. It has actually gotten a little worse. I am trying to rest which is hard with a 20 month old and a newborn but I think the less I do, the better it goes with the bleeding situation. Hopefully you are healing fine and everything looks good at your next appt.
