This thread is if you want to discuss names but don't want to go to the main Names Board on The Bump.

Re: Weekly Names Thread

  • Putting this here because I want to post with the people I "know," so glad I found this, lol

Ok, DH and I have had our baby name picked out for about 9 years, Our FN is decided and I thought MN was decided as well even though it's a bit weird (if you're gonna go weird, do it with the MN, right?!). Well now DH is having second thoughts on the MN but hasn't been able to come up with any alternatives.I think he just gets weirded out telling it to people because their reactions can go either way.

    The name is Cadence December.

    Any thoughts? Or Suggestions?

  • I love the name Cadence! I tend to gravitate towards short middle names with longer first names but that's just me. Sorry, I know that wasn't super helpful!
  • I love Cadence! And i wouldnt worry too much about having a more unique middle name. I think you can safely get more creative since they won't be judged off the bat by a middle. With that said, December isn't that weird anyway :) Go for it!
  • I like it. December isn't that weird (my bday is in December)

  • DH and I have been trying to come up with names that work in both English and Russian. So far we have:

    Girl: Violet/Violetta
    Boy: Sebastian/Sevastian, Nicholas/Nicholai (Nico), Leo/Lev, Damian

Any thoughts on the boys names? I am leaning towards Leo as I think it makes the best set with our first son Declan, but I am not 100% convinced. I am also leaning towards simple as we have a long Russian last name.

For a girl, is Violet way too trendy right now?

  • I like the name Cadence December. How often will you be calling your l/o by their entire name?!

Violet is cute! It is trendy right now, but if you love it, got for it.
My first name was super trendy in the early 80's and had 4 more Ashley's in my class. Not a big deal and you learn to live with it.

I have always liked the name Nicholas, so that's my vote. I really don't like the name Damian.
Violet is very trendy right now, but I still love it. If you love it, go with it :)

I love Leo! I would avoid Damian because of The Omen reference....

I'm also in the Nicholas / Nicholai camp. I just like the both languages version of the name than the others. Damien also reminds me of the Omen, which wouldn't be a deterrent for me, personally, but some people may care about that. Violet I think is a very pretty, very nature name. I haven't met any Violet's in real life, but I do feel that I saw a bunch of ladies with it on their list in the regular names board. But even still, if you love it, go for it.

DH randomly suggested Violet last night and I nixed it because to me it's trendier than I am comfortable with, but if you like it, go for it!

Is December a meaningful month for the two of you?

I wanted to name our upcoming baby "June" but I think it will sound silly given her birthday. Maybe still the middle name. (June is actually a family name).

Ok, as always, if you love it go for it, but just wondering - is there a reason behind December? My baby's MN will be May because that's the month when DH and I started dating. Obviously a bit more conventional than December so we haven't had too many negative comments, but a few people have been critical because we're not spelling it Mae. When we explain the significance for us they always back down :)

    .

I think Cadence is really cute but I'm not personally a fan of the name December, it kind of reminds me of a stripper ( sorry) I think something soft and girly would be nice paired with Cadence- Just my two cents. Obv if you love it- use it.

  • hoodoll82karaelaine1991 We have a big thing about Christmas and the whole holiday season. We love that time of year and I know it sounds corny, but we wanted a way to sort of bring that feeling to a child. We thought about other holidayish/seasonal names (Noelle, Natalie, etc) but nothing seemed to fit with Cadence or we had a negative association.

That's cute! As long as you both feel that way still, I'd say use it!

I love Violet! And I work in a children's library and have yet to encounter a Violet among my kiddos... granted, I can only speak for my area, but at least where I live, it's not super popular. We have a ton of Katies and Lilys but I don't know any Violets. However, I am not one to be concerned about how frequently a name is being used - my baby's name is going be Olivia May, both of which are fairly common. So I might not be the best person to ask if a name is "too" trendy...

ETA also I love all your boys choices, especially Sebastian! I could never use that one though because my last name has ton of S's and the poor kid would be screwed if he had a lisp lol

  • @ChrisLipstick - I love Nicholai, and wouldn't even bother with Nicholas. I feel like the pronunciation would be very similar in both languages. Violet, however, seems pretty different in each language (at least how I imagine a Russian to say it!). Have you thought about Vera? I LOVE Vera, but I'm having a boy, plus DH nixed it anyway.

I don't like Damien because of The Omen as well, but I do love Dmitri (another one I think is pretty close as pronounced by either English or Russian speakers). Good luck, this is getting harder the closer we get!
  • @frogger5 my DH nixed Vera as well. Boooo!
