Echogenic Focus in 19 Week Ultrasound

Hi all,

We had our anatomy ultrasound yesterday at 19 weeks 2 days. Everything looked normal, except the tech advised us she was able to see an echogenic focus on our baby girl's heart, which she told us is a soft marker for Downs Syndrome. She let us know that she didn't believe it was anything to be concerned with since everything else looked great and all of my blood work from my other screenings came back normal, however she still wanted me to go to the hospital for a second ultrasound. The second ultrasound isn't scheduled until next Wednesday. I've been kind of a mess ever since my appointment, even though she indicated there wasn't too much cause for concern. Has anyone else had this come up in their anatomy ultrasound?

I had a similar experience in that 2 of my ultrasounds showed "something," unexpected near the heart-while everything else appeared perfect. I went for fetal echo and the cardiologist said everything looked fine and couldn't even say for sure what the original ultrasounds showed at all, if anything. I was also a mess, but it all worked out! Try to stay positive!

  • Hello- I am in the same boat. They found an issue with baby's heart, kidney and brain. They are also considered soft markers. I go for my specialist sonogram on Wednesday. Try to stay positive- stay off google and know you're not alone!!!
  • DS1 had an echogenic cardiac focus on his heart at 19w. My doctor and our genetic counselor (we were seeing a GC for another issue) were not concerned at all. Apparently these bright spots are very common. In the Asian population, something like 30% of fetuses have them. While I am not Asian, it helped me understand what a non-issue this is in the absence of any other risk factors. I asked our dr what the follow-up was and he said nothing. He said if this was the old days when he could withhold info, he wouldn't even mention the spot because it is *that* not concerning to him. His phrasing was weird, but I appreciated his sentiment. Because of another issue, I ended up getting a second anatomy scan at 26 weeks and they saw that the spot had already resolved itself. LO was born perfectly healthy.
