April 2015 Moms

doctor appointments importance

Im due on april 16 putting me at 34 weeks.
I was in the hospital february 9 and 10th for pains, but they discharged me after 24 hr surveillance.
Aside from that, I havent seen my ob/gyn since mid january.
Ive had appointments scheduled but we live in NE tennessee and weve had crazy snow storms, making doctor appointments impossible to go to.
Is there anything I should be concerned with? Shes been active as normal and I feel like im about to pop.
We had an appt scheduled today but it snowed.. again.
I know im getting to where I have weekly appointments since its our last month, just anything you guys have experienced that I should be concerned with this late in the pregnancy with not seeing a doctor in almost a month

Re: doctor appointments importance

  • I suggest the next day you have where it's not snowing to call your doctor to see if they had any last minute cancellations since its been so long.
  • Loading the player...
  • I think the main reason to go is they check your BP (which could show if you're starting to develop pre-eclampsia) and your urine for proteins and sugars to see if you might be getting GD or an infection....
  • As pp said the main concern would be your blood pressure, I would call today and see what they suggest.  Can you take public transportation when it snows or a cab?
  • We've been having a lot of snow in virginia and in the south, the state shuts down. My OB office closed and I missed my 34 week appt. I was devistated since I'm high risk.

I called the next morning and got an appt with any OB in that group. Just wanted to be seen and know everything is okay.

I suggest doing the same. Call!!!
  • You absolutely should be going, there are tests that should be done around this time, and through to your due date. Not going since Januray is irresponsible.
  • Have you had Your strep b test? That's pretty important. I had mine done last week at 36 weeks. Also making sure baby is staying in the proper position..mine somehow flipped back to breech at my 34 week appt but was back to head down at 36. It's a pretty big liability on your doctor also to not see you for 3 months and then deliver your baby.
  • If you miss an appointment you need to call and go in as soon as you are able...there are reasons the doctor sees you as often as he/she does.
  • It's extremely important for you to be going to the doctor.
  • Yup- call the doctor asap and go. Every doc has a slightly different schedule for tests, but I'm sure you have missed something if you haven't gone in two months.
  • Have you even taken your Gestational Diabetes test? Also, if you were worried enough to go to the hospital for pains I would absolutely be going in for my normal prenatal visits to make sure everything is still ok.

It's probably snowing, so there is no internet in TN for her to respond. Be proactive in your care OP and get yourself an appointment.

  • What if it's snowing and the baby has a doc appointment in the future? Skippable for a couple months? Kinda doubt it.
  • And what exactly counts as crazy snow storms? If you're going to work then you can fit a doctors visit in.
  • You should be having your GBS test anytime in the next three weeks. The sooner the better.
  • In her defense... I live in Alabama & considering we don't get a whole lot or snow or ice, my dr office closes when the weather is 'bad' which has been frequently lately. Here in the south we don't get alot of snow and ice so we aren't equipped as well to deal with it as the bigger cities are. I have been in this position several times, however as soon as the roads cleared up I rescheduled my appointments.
  • as long as you at least go once a month it doesnt matter im british but im having my baby in africa kenya as my husband is kenyan national and im a FTM and only 18 and they just see you every month even at 32 weeks and you just go in to give birth once its time so the weekly or 2 weekly appointments arent really neccesary as i dont get them
  • I also am in the south and had to miss my appt last week but made it up. Same thing for today. My dr office closed due to icy roads, but I am scheduled for tomorrow instead.

OP, I'd recommend you call them and try to get them to work you in.
  • It's irresponsible to not have care for that long. Be a proactive adult and get an appointment rescheduled!

She hasn't been since Janurary, I very much doubt her doctors office has been closed since then. There really is no defense in not gong in 2 months.

The 2 weekly, and weekly appointments are completely necessary, once you get towards the end of your pregnancy.

That's why I said the next day they were open I rescheduled my appt... I was simply backing her up on the fact that dr offices do close bc of ice and snow here in the south, not justifying her actions.

  • See the problem with all this is when the doctors office isn't closed, as it had been for two weeks because of 8-12 inchs of snow, the state being declared in an emergency and now flooding, they are booked grin ask the other people who are "irresponsible" and have to reschedule. So I cant.clap my.ass cheeks amd get them.to fit me in anytime. They do so when available. Also, when it snows or rains my gravel road gets washed away making 4 foot.ditches or covered in multiple.layers.of ice. Both of which take weeks of riding the road commissioner to fix.. so... for all yall haters, get the facts or hop off.. k?
  • Riding the road commissioners ass, not riding him..
  • I see...so talking down to her isn't rude but coming back at you about your rudeness is??? Girl get out of here! My response was the same to her as y'all catty women except I didn't go into a full on know it all rant...like you all have been 100% perfect for 9 months and with every single pregnancy. You all can't just simply answer a question without self righteous attitudes...which is all she was looking for! So posting your little rules, maybe you all need to read them yourselves.
  • @sacottrell16 and @vetdr03 your responses were quite rude. Everyone is just concerned for mama and baby and is giving their opinions on the topic (which is what you were looking for). One pp even stated IMO, which means in my opinion.
The following is from the bump guidelines. Maybe you should familiarize yourself with them prior to posting again.
"DO keep in mind that you might not get the exact answer you're hoping for - and please don't let that upset you; remember that you can read thousands of conception [https://pregnant.thebump.com/getting-pregnant.aspx], pregnancy [https://pregnant.thebump.com/pregnancy.aspx] and parenting [https://pregnant.thebump.com/new-mom-new-dad.aspx] topics from articles on The Bump [https://thebump.com] too.
DO welcome constructive disagreement and refrain from getting upset if someone is of a differing opinion. Healthy and respectful debates thrive on The Bump, and disagreement does not constitute harassment."
Also, it's a "know it all" and name calling is not allowed on TB.

And correcting me over one word that I had no clue I had even typed...glad that made you feel all adult and things!!

. At my last appts. they checked my bp, weight, measured and listened to the hb. Wow, I missed so much. Trust if her bp was off she would know. If something was going on with the baby, her own body (decreased movements, contractions, etc) would give a hint quicker than measuring my uterus or just listening to a hb. So, yes hun...try to get an appt., but you are NOT a bad person if it has not happened!!

@vetdr03, That is one big dangerous assumption that a woman is so in tune with her body that she is automatically going to know if something is NQR. Those monthly, bi-weekly, and then weekly appointments are there to monitor the health of the mother and baby. Having them at those intervals gives the OB/MW a baseline. My OB scheduled me immediately for an US at 35 weeks when my measurement was off from what she had expected. It was important to know if it was due to position or organ development. As a vet, I would expect you to understand the importance of that.

No one talked down to her. As I previously stated, we are all just concerned for mama and baby. I don't see how my comment was rude as I simply copied and pasted the bump guidelines since it seemed as though you and OP have not yet read them.
  • What does wk mean
  • What does wk mean

White knight. Riding in to save/protect others.
  • The OP is 17 years old ladies...
Although she will be responsible for a baby, and absolutely needs to be accountable for providing necessary care for her unborn child- her questions/responses may be representative of not having all the life experiences we have all had.
I mean she could be my daughter if I gave birth at 17!!!!!
I hope OP has a good support system in place to help provide guidance/ assistance of child care.
