working after baby?

I currently work a shifted schedule 8am-9pm either 3 or 4 days a week. Im worried that my employer will not be able to accommodate a modified, part time schedule after the baby is born, as there is no way im putting my newborn in daycare for 13 hours a day...she has told me i am welcome to resume my normal schedule when i return. Im torn as to whether i should quit before baby is born, or to wait it out and see if she can figure out an alternate schedule.

Re: working after baby?

  • I would wait until after just in case something changes and that way you have the full picture.

  • If she is unwilling to consider another schedule, I'd leave as soon as you can financially make it work. Is your maternity leave paid? If so, take it. If not, I'd quit with notice that your last day will be when you're 39 weeks or something like that.
  • I would at least ask.  Why make a quick decision to quit if you don't know they will accomadate.
  • they may change their mind once they realize they need you to come back. I'd wait until baby is born and see what they are willing to offer and then if they refuse to accomodate you then quit.

if your mat leave is paid I would take it. At the end of it talk to her and see if anything has changed and if you can accomodate a flex schedule. if the answer is still no, then quit.
  • Take your maternity leave, and FMLA... Especially if your health insurance is through your employer. You and baby are going to need the coverage as long as you can. Try and negotiate a different schedule with your manager, and then make a derision. That's my plan. I have been with my employer a long time, and FMLA allows me to keep benefits all 12 weeks. If I quit, I have 30 days to find new coverage for hubby baby and me. Maternity leave will give you the time to prepare if you decide to leave.
